Has anyone had a spitfire pick guard made for their lakland P or J? Would love to see pics. Getting ready to send my vintage white pick guard in to have a black and/or tort made. I got such a great deal on this bass I'm trying to figure out if it's stupid to spend 40% of the price of the bass on a pick guard, or if its totally justifiable since I got a really nice deal on it...

I've owned 2 5 string Fender p basses and neither of them had the punch of a 4 string p,. I've owned both 4 and 5 string j basses and the 5 sounded pretty close to the 4. My point is that my 5502 with the bridge pup solo'd sounds as close to a 4 string p as either of the fenders I've owned and with the bridge side coil balanced with the neck, sounds as j bass as any other j bass I've played. However, it won't sound like my 95 SR5 no mater what I do. It's best setting (imho) is with the neck side coils of the bridge pup selected balanced with the neck pup.

I like single coils. What pups were I your Sadowski? You are on many different stages with elaborate lighting. Unless well shielded, SC pups could be really noisy. Many choices fo J pups.

Do it! The cool thing is that the pickups are probably the easiest things to change down the road, provided you choose a standard size.

Going deep and fast down the lakland rabbit hole, nice! I never did see how you are getting on with yours compared with the sadowsky?

There is a nice looking lakland J I am thinking about picking up locally for a nice price. I half ran it past my wife last night and I think she thought I was mostly joking, but she didn’t say no…. Part of me wants a fender 60’s AO to get the nitro finish, but I’m sure it will otherwise be lucky to compete.

I have way too many musical interests. So much fun but so scatterbrained and expensive! I’ve had a very “slutty” year as well, unfortunately. One of these days my wife will kill me in my sleep, just has to figure out how to disguise it so she can collect that life insurance.

Going deep and fast down the lakland rabbit hole, nice! I never did see how you are getting on with yours compared with the sadowsky?

I find splitting the MM pickup (switch towards the bridge) works best with my setup. Both the Lakland and Sadowsky sound great to my ears. I’m loving the low B and thinner neck on the Lakland though.

My last 3 shows I’ve only used the 55-02. The Lakland is definitely getting all the attention these days. My purple Sadowsky is going no where. But, my Satin PJ may be up for grabs to fund the 55-AJ.

So, to sum it all up I will always love my Sadowsky 4 bangers. But, I’m leaning towards Lakland 5 strings more each day!

I have gravitated towards a similar setting, which gives it a nice, round, active J kind of sound. Pickup blend in the middle, using only the bridge half of the MM, very slight bass and treble boost, flat mids. The sound I heard in my head and spent a long time looking for! Until I screwed it all up and got hooked on a p with flat’s sound…

Very cool photo! Thanks for sharing that. I am a huge fan of The Waterboys and David Hood has played on several of their recent albums and went on tour with them in 2015-16. His solid bass playing is all over the album Modern Blues from 2015.

I hear ya. When I had my 4-94, I used a setting similar to that. I have tried many times but have NEVER bonded with the P sound. Have even had the opportunity to play many variations of P’s, with various strings, pups etc, that @JEDI BASS has. JJ has quite the collection! Close but I am not quite a P guy yet! Getting there thanks to JJ.

It happened to me completely by accident. For several years my only bass was a 4494. I wanted a bit of a beater I didn’t have to worry about or baby. I brought my 4494 into the shop to have some work down and I knew I’d be without a bass for at least a few weeks with as often as I get down to the city during the pandemic. Brian had a 4464 skyline b stock at a nice price and I said, eh what the hell!

They wound up having my bass for a month, my fault not theirs. So for a month the only thing I had to play was the P. I got home and did a quick set up, started playing and it was immediate regret. What the heck did I do? This neck is so slow, the sound is pretty unrefined and it’s definitely heavier than the American 4494. Over the course of the month though I slowly bonded with it and when I picked up the 4494 it just sounded zingy and obnoxious. It’s faster but not in a way I could really appreciate or need in a meaningful way.

I forced myself to put the P down and get reacclimated to the 4494 which I have. But I still enjoy playing the P. I really just play and work on different things when I have them. When I have the P on I’m playing Jameson and willie weeks. When I have the 4494 on I’m playing jamiroquai or working on technique or technical musical ideas. Willie weeks is a lot more fun to play than running the 7th chord inversions up and down the fretboard!

I just found out that was his son’s band a few months ago after listening to this podcast. He also talked about his time with the waterboys.

Man! So sorry to hear. The anticipation of getting a new instrument only to be disappointed upon arrival is definitely a BUMMER! Sounds like your return should be painless, hopefully. Well, continue the search for a replacement bass.

So it looks like we solved the truss rod issue on the 55-AJ and she’s coming back to me. The store apparently had the proper sized wrench and was able to confirm it wasn’t stripped. He discovered the truss rod was loosened to the point it was free. He was able to tighten it with no issues and reengaged it to flatten the neck. He sent me pics of the wrench fitting in the slot and of the flattened neck. He offered to send it back with the wrench on their dime. I accept the offer. Good humans still exist!

Glad the problem is solved. The truss rod in my 4464 spins freely in the middle, and then stiffens at the edges of its range as you tighten or loosen it more. I too thought I had a problem with mine. A little unnerving when it’s spinning freely and you can’t even tell if you are really inside the socket for it. My skyline 4464 neck plays great with basically no relief and with the strings barely up off the fret board. The plek job is a beautiful thing!

Thanks for the link, Fred! I've been a Truckers fan for about 15 years, so I knew the history. Shoalsfest was started in 2019 by Jason Isbell, a former member of the Truckers and now an acclaimed singer/songwriter on his own. He grew up in the same area, so he knew David before even meeting the Truckers. At the first Shoalsfest, Mavis Staples performed and David joined her (I think it was for I'll Take You There), again rocking a Lakie.
