It’s honestly unbelievable how much this bass stands out amongst the 100+ I have owned and/or still do. It’s easily the best playing US Lākland I’ve had. My Carl Pedigo dual P, and my ‘89 Pedulla MVP can hang with it.

The set of Cobalt flats I pieced together (130-95-70-60) required some nut slot widening. But, man do they growl, and brought the bass back to life! Why don’t more string manufacturers offer balanced sets?! The TI J flats weren’t right for it. I may sell them. They have about an hour of play time on them.

I'm interested in this as well (and may go try to find out myself). The knobs are the one thing I dislike. They look okay and are easy to grip and turn, but... every time the bass goes into a gig bag, it comes out with every knob turned some crazy way. They're TOO grabby! And also they're sorta sterile compared to the sweet quilted maple sunburst on this puppy.

Have a question about 2012 44-02 just bought recently,my first Lakland. Printed the control page from Lakland website. Noticed the volume knob push pull,passive active, the toggle switch. In passive mode does it save the battery? Might have it wrong,but been seeing LH 3 feature? Thanks!

I've been mulling a question for J.O. owners (wasn't sure if this was the best spot to ask, or if I'd be better off with a fresh thread, but we'll try this first).

For those who own (or have owned) J.O.s in the past, primarily from the Dan era, I'm curious as to what your basses weighed. Specifically, I'm curious as to what the lightest end of the J.O. spectrum might have produced. Were they all pretty much in the 9-9.5 lb range? If anyone happened to weigh one that came in around 8.5 (or even lower), I'd be curious as to what the likelihood would be of ending up with an early J.O. in that weight range (as opposed to around 9+, which seems far more likely).

Just a thought. Interested to see if anyone has any info to share. Thanks.

I had a gorgeous Dan era US JO 5er that I should have kept. Anyways, I don’t recall weighing it. But, I can guarantee (from memory) that is was not 9.5 pounds. Back then, all my US 5ers seemed to hit below 9 pounds. It’s not uncommon to see US 4s in the 8 pound range. My Carlo, which is basically a dual P 44-94, is less than 7.5 pounds.

Purdy bass! I don't know the answer for 100% sure, but it is very much the norm across many brands of preamps / active basses that while the output jack has a cable connected, the battery's circuit to the preamp is closed i.e. drawing power.

That doesn't mean the battery's presence is necessary for passive mode to function; it's also very feasible to have the bass's audio signal bypassing the preamp entirely, so the battery has no involvement in the pickups reaching the output jack.

I'd be happy to be wrong, but feel like if the design were feasible, it'd be widespread. Y'know?

I owned two US JO's, 1 Alder and 1 Ash, both when Dan owned Lakland. I don't remember the exact weights but neither of them was as heavy as 9.5. Both were definitely under 9 lbs. I never should have sold the Ash one. She was a punchy growling beast.

If the cord is plugged in, it’s draining the batter regardless of active/passive status.

Thanks,yes I knew leaving cord plugged in would drain the battery. Some other models had a passive/active toggle switch,and when in passive mode thought it would not drain the battery? I would think like you say,it would drain the battery if cord was plugged in.

I don't think passive mode " saves the battery" per se

It's just a backup in case a battery dies

I know there is a forum for this type of thing but I know that I am amongst friends who understand this is a quicker easier path.

I am looking for a 44-02 or 44-01. Color isn't important but I do want a rosewood fretboard. One of the early Korean ones when the 02' had Barts. Anyone have something like that they are looking to unload? If so I am your huckleberry
