The first Lākland P bass was modeled after Bob Glaub’s, and I think his was a ‘64. Back in the day, Lākland P basses were called Glaubs and the J basses were Joe Osborns.

Ive been through a lot and I mean a lot of instruments when it comes to 5 strings. The one that always stuck was a Lakland 55. Ive owned now 3 55-02's and a 1999 Bart 5594, 1 Joe Osborn 4 string, and a DJ5... For me personally the thing that makes it so great is that MM J pickup config. Its versatile, its warm, its punchy, its just a beautiful sounding instrument that will out punch anything imo. I loved the 55-94 but I personally think you get enough of Lakland from a 55-02 deluxe. I will probably not want another 5 string because it does everything. And it does it really well.And for god sake they are so well made. . Received 44-14 US Lakland with John East preamp,according to previous owner? Will have to get use the control knobs compared to the 44-02 Skyline Deluxe I also have. Hopefully someone here can educate me? Seems like one of the knobs with the center knob is not functioning like it should,like it shorting out. Would have to hear it to know what I mean.

Sweet! I am so interested in this set up as something I want to do as well. I have a East MM pre with the mid sweep. Love it. The stacked knobs, as I understand it have springs supplied with them that help with grounding? If not making proper contact that could account for some problems. Can you give more detail. I seem to remember coming across this info in the John East forum.

@MaxSpinrun, Also it has the toggle switch which is not showing in the layout in yours,that have pictured ?

The toggle switch on your Lakland is for the coil select of the bridge pup.

Remember, the very low volume when in passive mode on the 02/94/14 basses happens because the stock pickups have low output. They were designed that way. No preamp, when not engaged, will add gain to the passive output.

I have extensive experience with East preamps, and I don't like the LH-3 (yeah, blasphemy!). So fire away! The first thing you need to find out is if you have the Unipre or the older U-Retro. They are different beasts. When you can, please send us a pic of the open cavity.

Thanks,here is a picture of the open cavity,and the picture with allen wrench around the stack control knob is the one distorting when you bump it,and it will go off and on when turning. When turning both turns,and will not turn independent of each other. I have to hold the bottom one,while turning top one. Thought they might need to allow more clearance between the two. I tightened up the shaft nut,and the distorting not happening when turning the knobs.

Cool, yeah, definitely the Unipre you have there. If I understood correctly, if you remove the knobs from the misbehaving shaft, and operate it "naked", no problems at all?
