I did neglect to mention! This is a 44-02, three-tone sunburst if your mind's eye is curious (I've got photos somewhere but you get the idea)... and while the 50/50 pickup tone on it is already very fine, I've never owned a bass that responded so well to going toward the bridge while maintaining thunder with a bit of EQ. The band members heard it and were ecstatic!
Honestly, the only thing that might stand a chance of supplanting this puppy would be some pricey custom job (with pickups that respond similarly heh). There's great Sadowskys and Roscoes and Pedullas and Foderas, but there's no guarantee that any of them would scratch the itch that this bass does, in such a thorough fashion.

I completely understand how you feel. I just sold off a 44-02 and miss that tone already. I just placed an order for another one.

I saw this on Reverb. Wouldn't 2004 55-94 have Bartolini pickups and electronics?

I think the short answer is yes. I believe Lakland transitioned to their in-house pickups in 2007. However, that bass appears to be somewhat customized. Notice the neck has no dots on the fret board. The vast majority of 55-94s have dots on the fretboard. The current owners could be confused about the year of production or it could be modded.
I remember that circa 2007 Lakland offered to upgrade folks Bartolini's and Preamp to the LH pickups and preamps. I know several local players who did that
After hearing the LH vs the Bartolini's I didn't upgrade mine. This is a very likely one of those basses that were sent in and upgraded.

The easy solution would to be to get the serial #. That shop is in the Chicago area, the previous owner could have had the electronics swapped out at Lakland.
It has the older Hipshots without the branding on them (which also could have been swapped out), the older knobs (also an easy swap) and the birdseye looks pretty figured on the fingerboard, which would indicate to me it’s an older bass, but who knows. Naperville is about an hour drive each way, and I have no reason to head that way, or I’d go check it out.

I think those tuners would be accurate for either a 2004 or a 2007. You're right, really the only way to know for sure is the serial number.
Jus as a way of comparison, I own a 55-94 that I purchased in 1999 pictured below. The Serial No. is 6385.
If I read the Lakland Production by Serial Number chart correctly, that has the bass being manufactured in 2002.
That's incorrect. No looking at the stamp on the headstock it might possibly be 5385 which would make it a bass
built in 1998. That's also wrong. So, it's just a mystery as to why the serial no. is off, but I guess mistakes occasionally
happen. It's just an anomaly of some sort. It's still a wonderful bass.

Otherwise, I'd basically just want a Skyline version of my passive 44-PJ in Charcoal Frost
Alternatively, a passive Skyline 4 string in Charcoal Frost with two Darkstars. A 44-DS if you will.
