I have a fretless one. The 1.5" nut and thin neck plays like butter. I did swap out the pickups for a set of Nordstrand humcancelling ones. I didn't like the noise from the single coil bridge pickup. It's my first P/J and I like having the option of blending the pickups. Body wise, super comfortable just like a Fender Precision.

I wonder whether it might be more helpful to run a series of polls:
1st - Body shape & string numbers
2nd - Pickup/preamp arrangement
3rd - Fingerboard
4th - Inlays

Etc
Not ideal, but design it by committee would hopefully then lead to a resultant bass with the right number of people invested in it.

Can I join the Party with my Beautiful 1998. Probably my favorite and most versatile bass.
I live in Canada and the neck needs micro adjustments all the time. I've gotten used to setting ht neck up and making those adjustments.

mine was a very early one - sometimes got mistaken for a US made version - even by the guys at Lakland....it was really nice.

It had Fralin pickups...was originally a P only and I had it converted to a PJ...still miss it...it was that good!

played excellent and sounded JUST like a nice P should.

Mine was the std 1.75" nut...

Just wrapped up a recording-from-home session for a new song with my primary band.

Signal path:

-'03 MIK Lākland Skyline Deluxe w/ pup set to 9am, i.e. mostly to bridge, plus small mid & low boosts, switch centered
-Rupert Neve active RNDI
-Black Lion Audio B173 preamp set to a hair's breadth short of CineMag SS transformer breakup (a quirky but glorious position on an incredible upgrade to the Neve 1073 circuit)
Focusrite Clarett line in

With the RNDI and B173, my headroom is basically infinite, so I did takes to not have sloppy references to my poverty of ability as a bassist, but once satisfied, I'm adding a couple plugins to the bass and the master bus just for listening... and when I say this bass can define the term "sexy"... the song called for a number of downward slides and things, and this bass is MADE for that.

Not sure if I'll have time to reamp thru some Sushi Box & Quilter & Audiokinesis gear (mic of choice: EV PL88L), but even if not, I'm honestly okay with the DI being my end result.

Lāklands are just plain sexy basses, apparently.

Great to hear!! Just curious, which Lakland Skyline Deluxe are you using? 44-02? 55-02? Another?

So I sold off my Lakland 44-02 and 44-94 and returned to my favored DJ-4. I brought the DJ-4 to a jam session with friends, and man, it just felt like home. It's been my main player for 2 years but had been neglected for the past 3 months or so as I fussed around with a 44-02 and then the 44-94. It plays great live with a band and just fits right. I can set it and forget it. When I tried the 44-94 with the band, I found myself constantly tinkering with the controls and never got comfortable with it.

However, playing at home, I miss owning a 44-02 and have been looking to get another one. I came to really like the active controls and the versatility of tones where I can really hear it.

Just curious, does anyone else do this with their Laklands? Use one for live and one for home use/recording? Has anyone gotten rid of a 44-02/44-94/ or 55/02-55/94 and then quickly gotten another one after realizing they missed it?

Having been through over 30 Lāklands, I must say… no… I never sell one and buy another of the same model.

I’m kidding of course. I’ve had a lot of the 94/02 basses and flipped the Skylines rather quickly cause none came close to my first Lakland, a ‘99 (or ‘00 hard to remember) 55-94 that I would still buy back today if I could get the buyer to return my attempts to contact him. Were ya at Aaron Woynarowski?!!!! You disappearing son of a *****!!

Anyways, I’m not a knob tweaker. I can center the preamp and flip the MM coil selector to the neck coil, and I’m in heaven with my 4-94. But, I’ve yet to find that in a jazz style bass.

I was already down the 44-94 path. I just didn’t feel comfortable with it. Too high end for me. An incredible instrument but I am more comfortable with the Skyline series.

I don’t get it. But, I accept what you’re saying.

I gig my serial number 11 4-94 and an ‘89 Pedulla MVP all the time. Both are truly not replaceable. Neither compares to one of our guitarists that brings a pre-CBS strat to every show.

Alternatively, a passive Skyline 4 string in Charcoal Frost with two Darkstars. A 44-DS if you will.

Yes. I use a Skyline 55-60 as my main gigging bass (for many reasons but I've always been more comfortable with a Jazz layout live) and have a 55-14 as my backup. I use both of my 55-94's for recording. Between the Barts and the LH3, I can usually cop almost any tone I need for the style of music I'm recording.

Then there are all the others...

The only one I've had that I've not bonded with is the DJ-4 (that you love). I found it to completely disappear in the mix so it's always fascinating to me how each of us have different experiences with similar basses. I also currently have a 44-64 GZ that my ear just won't bond with but I'm not selling it (yet) as I do think it will come around.

Not a bad looking 94. My first ever Lakland was a flamed/spalted Skyline 55-02 Deluxe and I think I got a special one with how dark the (supposed?) rosewood board is. Looks almost ebony to me.
