Lakland Skyline Hollowbody

Just curious.. im actually leaning towards the bartolini setup at the moment, but the coil tapping isn't that big of a deal to me. From the audio samples the barts sound more like what ive got in mind. Theres one going for 899 used on GC.com currently that has the bart setup.

Depending on the period of production, 3 different type of pickups have been installed by Lakland :
- First series : Bartolini humbuckers
- Second period : Darkstar
- Now : Hanson Chisonic (apparently single coil with neodymium magnet).
What I don't know is when the changes have occured. Mine is 2004 and has Barts.

When I was looking for mine, I played a USA Bart equipped model that sounded and felt amazing. It wasn't for sale ultimately, so I couldn't buy it. But I don't even like Bartolini pickups and loved them in that bass. Perfect combo.

Now that I'm happy with my upgrades, I'll probably post my neodium single coils to the classifieds as well as a custom wiring harness that Kelling sound made for me, which was: pickup selector (all positions, series, parallel, out of phase), vol, vol, varitone, tone strength knob (from tone bypass to full tone). Sounded great but just doesn't work with my preamp.

I love the Barts. I'm also not a huge Bartolini fan but love them in this and I cannot stand chi sonics. I know people like them but they couldn't be further from the sound I like in any bass I've played them in. I've never played one with dark stars but would love to. I'd be very interested to hear it with your pickups and pre as well.

I'm very happy with the sound now. There's nothing wrong with the chisonics, they just didn't do it for me. Which is kind of funny because before I bought my hollowbody, I found a pro bass player who has played his extensively live and in the studio and he said that I should make sure to get a chi version as he really loved those pickups. Different strokes.

Here's a Lakland Skyline Hollowbody I picked up a few months ago from a fellow TB'er. It's fairly unusual both in it's color as well as in the fact that it has has a rare factory-installed 3-band Bartolini active preamp. Lot's of different tones here. I'm typically a Fender guy, so this was something different.

I had my eye on that one. Congrats! How easy is it to get a good tone from that pre?

That's really the key with these kinds of preamps. Took me a long time to realize it. Start flat and add small amounts of treble and bass till you get a full sound. Don't worry about extremes and tune with your ears, not your eyes on the knobs. Do the mids last if at all.

I don't think I've ever posted mine. It's a 2004 with the Bartolini's. Very cool bass. I think I like the other colors better, but this isn't bad either. I really like the Gold one posted above by @mojomike001; and I've always liked the red and the bursts. But it's the only Inca Silver bass I own now so I'm happy with it.
