Double Bass Larry Hurst Sabbatical

Mr. Hurst took half a semester of sabbatical at the end of this last year. I believe IU faculty are allowed one semester of sabbatical every 7 years? (something like this.) So if he is going to take one soon it would only be for half of one semester (1/4 of a year). And as someone mentioned above, you could just ask him... hurst[at]indiana.edu

Mr. Hurst told us that the teacher who replaces him will be someone of only the highest quality, "with extensive orchestral experience." Since possible candidates will come through and give lessons/masterclasses this coming year, we'll get a good feel for who will fit well at IU. Mr. Hurst wouldn't hire someone without hearing the input of his students first. I trust that whoever he chooses won't be a step down in any way.

Side note: As far as we know, Mr. Bransby will still be around for a while, so the bass department won't be completely changed.

It's gonna be an interesting year for Hurst's studio, having all those teachers coming in and all. Owen Lee (Cincinnati principal) has been kind of adjunct bass faculty as of late, to help Hurst with teaching all of his students (he has 20+) so he may well be a candidate for the job. Has anyone else heard a rumor about Hal Robinson coming in? It seems unlikely that he would leave his current post...

Indiana has the resources to pay dang near anyone well enough to leave their current positions. Note the hiring of Joshua Bell, Andre Watts, Slatkin, etc... in recent years. I wouldn't rule anyone out. Remember- they bought Bruce out of the LA Phil after all.:D

Keep us posted on who's coming in. I may try to drive down and sit in on some of the masterclasses!

Bell and Slatkin are rarely at the school. Slatkin conducts roughly one concert every two years and Bell comes for about a week a year.

They certainly have the resources to pay really well in southern Indiana, though.

I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to study with Mr. Hurst at IU. Even just the fraction of his knowledge that I was able to absorb in my 4 years in Bloomington has been a seed that has grown through all aspects of my life. Truly an end of an era.

It will be interesting hearing about the hiring process... I know of some pretty big names that are interested.
