Double Bass Larry Hurst Sabbatical

Hal will never leave Curtis until he retires.. Principal in Philly plus teaching at arguably the best music school in the country and being able to do both in the same city, and probably making a boatload of money doing it. Theres no way IU can offer enough to get him to quit that, haha.

+1 irbassist! Hal is in what is perhaps the most enviable position in North America. Not to disrespect IU, but there is no way that situation could unseat him

I'm not going to add fuel to the speculation fire, but here are a few of the recent hires in the IU string department as well as their previous positions.

Stephen Wyrczynski - section viola, philadelphia orchestra
Peter Stumpf - Principal cello, LA Philharmonic
Eric Kim - Princpal cello, Cincinnati Symphony
Alex Kerr - Concetmaster, Concertgebouw Orchestra
Jorja Fleezanis - Concertmaster, Minnesota orchestra

My point being, it's going to be someone good.

I don't really see the point in speculating in what Hal will or will not do. Maybe he is ready to leave Philly and start a new life. After 20-some years, he may be ready to settle down and teach. And maybe not! Maybe he will stay at Curtis/Philly orchestra till the day he dies. My point is, it is clear that no one knows what is going on or what will happen at IU. The only people that should be saying anything about this are prof. Hurst or the dean of IU.

Back to the practice room, everyone!

I studied with Craig Brown a couple summers ago at Brevard and he is really an incredible teacher. Just because you don't know the name doesn't mean he isn't a great teacher or a reason not to be excited... I say go Craig Brown and go IU!

Yeah I'm sure he's great, otherwise IU wouldn't have hired him! I definitely wasn't trying to put him down.
