Double Bass Larry Hurst Sabbatical

IU hasn't made any official statements yet. As far as I know, they've found people they are interested in hiring, but haven't had anything concrete happen quite yet. I'd say that if you're interested in the school, go ahead and audition. You can bet that they'll find a good replacement for Hurst (and if I can make in a personal note here, Bransby's a good teacher as well), but if you don't like who they got (and you know who's studio you got into), then it's only the application fee + travel lost. Not too much money down the drain when you consider that you're investing in education. And hey, even if you come next year with the new teacher and don't like him/her, you can always transfer.

Bransby has no say in who comes. A current symphony principal spoke to Bransby and he made it sound as though it's not up to Bransby. Meaning Bransby won't have much influence on who comes in. No matter, one cannot touch the Bransby legend!

Since IU has not publicized an official job announcement and IU is a public university the president of the university must approve the candidate prior to hiring a new teacher. As far as who has say in the next bass professor at IU, I believe there's a large committee of faculty who give their okay as well. In the end, let's be real, hurst is going to make sure that his successor is the best of the best... Especially in the category of orchestral experience.

Hi, I'm a current student of Professor Hurst. I have not heard "that it will indeed be Hal Robinson." His name is in the mix of people being considered, and everyone likes him.

In the meantime, here is one of Mr. Hurst's favorite youtube videos:
