Double Bass Larry Hurst Sabbatical

This is an interesting appointment. I'm unfamiliar with Mr. Brown's work. He may be an excellent teacher, but we'll have to see how this affects the program, as he isn't quite a "name brand" for most of the community. Also, at one point IU had a standing policy of exclusively hiring principle players from major orchestras...

Did anyone have a chance to take lessons or attend masterclasses with him in Bloomington?

Mr. Brown is an excellent teacher, and he will be more than capable of handling things for a year. We actually had him here while Professor Hurst was on sabbatical for a portion of last spring. While he does differ stylistically from Mr. Hurst on some things, he does have an extensive background in orchestral music to lend legitimacy to his ideas. Some of his former students have already come through the IU program, including Kit Polen(Chicago Civic) and Steve Metcalf(Colburn in the fall), and many IU students head to Brevard to work with him during the summer.

Also remember that the teachers are only part of what makes IU special. Much of what you learn here is from your large number of peers, whether it be a good simulation of job competition, or new ideas that come from different backgrounds. It's a close-knit community, and we'll continue pushing each other to excel no matter who's teaching. If you're considering studying here, do it!
