Well, just spent about an hour trying to solder a lead to the coil ends.

Incredibly, it measured the same on the ohm meter, and I had my husband hold the pickup over a bass after I plugged it in. It actually made sounds, just like a real pickup. I feel as though a miracle occurred :hyper:

Now, I just need to find some kind of wax, or epoxy to hold the coils in place, and mount it to the cover.

Well, either the Kahler tremolo bridge shipped from Nevada and was routed through Sacramento, California, or it ships from their California warehouse, because according to USPS tracking, that's where it is. Either way, it's suppose to arrive tomorrow.

I started looking into potting the pickup, and it looks like the least expensive way to do this, is to buy a small crock pot, which go for between $15 and $20, and some paraffin wax, which is about $10 or so. I'm a little concerned, living in Phoenix, that the wax may melt if I play outdoors in the sun. Maybe I'll cover the whole thing in epoxy after wax potting it.

If you do decide to pot it in wax instead of epoxy, there's no need to buy a crock pot to melt it. Waxes almost all melt below 100 C, so just put a pot of boiling water on the stove and stick a jar/bowl/whatever of wax chunks in it to melt. Et voilá! Melted-but-not-burnt wax for the low low price of nothing. I suppose it'd be rather cumbersome if you wanted to soak it for a long time, though, in which case a crock pot probably wins. My $0.02...

Reading up about the wax, it seems to burst into flames at a certain temperature, so I went ahead and ordered a crock pot from Amazon. It was $12.99, and features an adjustable temperature control. Since I also ordered a new strap at the same time, shipping was free. A small price to pay to not burn down the house :P

I also ordered a block of paraffin wax. With shipping, that was under $10.00. Both should arrive within a week or so. Pictures forthcoming.

In other news, the bridge arrived in Phoenix this morning. Hoping to see it this afternoon. Just waiting on the neck at this point. The only things left to order are a couple more pickup covers.

Well, the bridge arrived today.

So I'm just waiting on the neck at this point. A few other parts, like the pickup covers, I'll order shortly. I'm waiting until the wax and crock pot gets here to see if I can actually make a finished pickup. The neck is the only main part that's holding back progress at this point.

I figure another month or so once that arrives, assuming my band doesn't start gigging every weekend.

This is the second neck I ordered from Carvin. The first one shipped within 4 weeks, which aligns with their timeframe stated on the website. This order was closer to 6 weeks. According to the email exchange with customer service I had last week, they are the busiest they've ever been. I can imagine that including overseas shipping, an 8 week wait sounds about right.

Awesome i am super excited for you, and to see it, when you've got it working definitely do a write up on that bridge, I have been thinking about getting one but I don't know if it's justifiable as essential or not!

I've had mixed feelings about going with a tremolo bridge, and did a bit of research on them. The Kahler is the most favored of all the reviews I've read. I'm a little concerned that it cannot be "locked", like many guitar tremolos, but many reviewers said that it wasn't a problem - the bass stays in tune.

I wouldn't say it's "essential", but I like having the option, especially on this bass. I should be able to provide first impressions of use in a few weeks.
