Yes, it's starting to look like a bass :)

I assembled the bobbins for the other pickups. I just have to round over the edges and I'll be able to start winding them.

If I have enough wire, I'll do three, as I changed the design slightly. If not, I'll use the original one as the bridge pickup. It turns out the poles are spaced correctly. I'm not sure what I was thinking before.

Thank you! It was really this forum that provided the inspiration for both builds. I found TalkBass while looking for some setup solutions, and came across the Luthier's Corner. After reading through a bunch of builds, I remember thinking "I can do that". And here we are :)

And the mail just arrived, along with the 2 other pickup covers.

Looks small enough that if it's not too deep, you could sand down the whole area, maybe take a bit of the edge off all around the head cap. Probably won't stand out.

The rest of the bass is going to look so good, no one will notice it.

I think it may be too deep to sand it out. I may just leave it. I fear that it will become darker if I try to fill it in. I guess the mahogany is more prone to chipping than the maple portion, which is chip free.

I might be able to reduce it if I do a round over with the router. Though I don't have a good experience routing a head stock. Last time I tried, I chipped off a huge chunk. I was able to glue it back though.

I'll have to think on it for a while.

That sounds a little better. If it's not that deep you could probably sand it and round it over a little by hand and not use the router at all.

Again, shaping it by hand with a file is option, but I'm thinking you don't want alter the Ric headstock shape too much since it is so iconic.

Yes mahogany is more prone to chipping than maple. I had mahogany body wings on my first build that were downright stringy. A lot time shaping by hand with a file to get it all out.

The ABS plastic came in so I cut out and shaped the pickup covers, and while I had the sander on the drill press, shaped the bobbins as well. I'll throw a little more CA glue on them and they'll be ready for winding.

For the chip, could you not glue in a small piece of mahogany with CA? Ideally Square up the bottom of the chip (I knew I would use that 1/16" chisel some day) and using a chisel cut a small piece from mahogany (matching the grain orientation) to fit and scrape it flush.

I may try that. Matching the grain may be difficult. I'll try sanding it out first. Thanks for the suggestion.

Everytime you post I come over all excited, but then I see it's just a text reply to someone else and there are no new photos/updates it upsets me.

Really enjoying this project.
