And since I had the tung oil out, and my gloves on, I figured I'd put one more coat on the bass.

So pretty!

I pulled off the fretboard tape yesterday, thinking I had put on the last coat, so I was trying to be careful not to get any on it.

Actually, Tung Oil is fantastic on a fingerboard, IMHO. Every one of my instruments gets a couple of coats of either the Formby's Tung Oil or Tru-Oil on the fingerboard.

Wow, I don't read the forums for a short while and an entire mini-episode has happened around the truss rod cover.

I prefer it with non myself.

So the leaf just doesn't cover up the original truss rod cover screw hole, though I like the look of the leaf. I have another I can try, and attempt to sand down flat the bottom without going too low to reveal the screw hole.

I like the shark fin too. It blends well, keeps the Ric vibe, but doesn't stand out too much. These are my 2 favorites. Today, anyway.

I put on another coat of the tung oil on all the covers and the knobs. I'm letting the bass cure. I'm hoping a few days is enough when I start putting it together.

I also ordered a bunch of little magnets which I'll use to "mount" the truss rod cover, so they will be easily swapped out if I change my mind. Again

How about reversing the maple shark fin so that it's a bit further away from the G tuner post? I'm not sure if it's too close for the tuner bushings, but it might look cool too.

I like the sharkfin, I think i like the tri-color one more but I dont know how that would clash with the already tri-colored headstock. I think the bare maple would look good with some form of logo or maybe a outline of some sort so it doesnt blend into the headstock but has a 3-d variation.

Eitherway I dont think I would get to hung up on such a minor thing that can be swapped in a minute.

Agreed. Subtle, fitting to the design and in no way distracts from a truly beautiful head stock.

I vote for the Leaf! Yeah, yeah, the rest of the bass is so ornate, the headstock need a leaf to make it fancy like the body.

I vote for the leaf - simple, elegant, understated… thee best design solution for that bass! It's funny how you styled it after a macho dude's axe and through your hands it comes out a very pretty instrument! Well done.

No, that's it. I'm putting a stop to this right now. This bass is gorgeous, and Mapleglo is a true artist. There is NO Truss Rod Cover on this Earth she could put there that would in any way ruin this instrument. Cut out a little stop sign. A penguin. A loaf of bread. It doesn't matter; the bass will look great. I am done voting for Truss Rod Covers. I will report all posts about Truss Rod Covers to the mods as trolling.*

I dunno. The leaf makes it look like a sculpture in the Vatican museum. The sculpture is beautiful, but the leaf is distracting.

Maple sharkfin for me. Round the top edge, it'll look great!

Keep them all and try them again with the strings in place. The strings will busy up the area a bit and let you know which designs will work on the final version. No use making the decision now and then having to change your mind once you see it in place with the tuners and strings.

Thanks again for all the comments, suggestions, and interest! I think it's down to these two, but I'll have to redo the leaf. I don't like that it doesn't cover that truss rod screw hole. I am tending toward the leaf again, though if I can find some kind of decal or logo for the shark fin, that might change my mind. And I agree, I'll have to wait until everything is together with the strings on to really see how each cover will work.

The magnet to mount the cover is ingenious. More builder should do it. We've been using magnets to hold hatches on Model R/C airplanes for a few years now. I little 1/8, or 1/4" rare earth from radio shack would do a great job
