I didn't know that Radio Shack carries them, or I would have picked some up on my way home. I ordered them through Amazon. I think I paid about $7 for 30 magnets 1/4" x 1/16". They supposedly hold a pound and a half. They should arrive on Monday.

I have an idea! make all the leaves on the bass attach with magnets so you can start to remove them in the fall, have them all gone for winter and start reattaching them for spring and summer!

Use all covers with the magnets on the same place, so you can change the covers and they will always fit to your party dress

I like the maple shark fin the best so far. It would look great with a logo engraved on it.

I don't like the shark fin. There's always one, huh? I think it's too much. The general shape doesn't fit in with the aesthetic of the rest of the piece. It looks out of place.

I dunno. The leaf makes it look like a sculpture in the Vatican museum. The sculpture is beautiful, but the leaf is distracting.

Maple sharkfin for me. Round the top edge, it'll look great!

I think I like the maple shark fin because the maple blends in to the wood behind it. I think a rounded triangle shape made of maple would work just as well, if not better.

After seeing the leaf, it is an obvious choice. Definitely use the leaf. Brings the motif up to the headstock and completes the bass.
The sharkfin is so far my least favorite.

I think this would work either way with a mahogany "tongue depressor" to give the leaf a background, or maple to make it just cover the hole without showing up much, but still having the leaf be the main focus.

I guess the tongue depressor part would have to be really thin though if the thickness of the leaf was a problem.

How's this: Maple sharkfin w/ mahogany backing and a beveled edge to show a hint of the backing, and a custom logo care of lavmonga (although I think it'll look best blank).

Plus, you can change it out weekly (or more) with one of your others as whims dictate (like me and my P bass pickguards.)

Multiple options, no rush to decide, and you can just get the thing done already (so I could maybe play it sometime...)

I vote for the maple sharkfin as well but my $.02 would be to roundover a slight chamfer around the top. The sharp edge makes it look a little dense and bulky to my eyes.

(I'm blown away that you've given us a thread about a bass that looks this nice and the biggest response is over what to do with the trussrod cover...)

Great suggestions and ideas! Really, all of you have been as much a part of this build as I, and I'm grateful for all of your participation.

I'm planning on starting assembly early Saturday morning, and I'm hoping I'll be playing it by afternoon. The magnets won't arrive until Monday, so the truss rod cover will have to wait until then at the earliest. I agree that each cover I intend on using will have to have the magnet located in the same place for easy switching. I also agree that the shark fin should be a little shorter, and perhaps even with a more rounded point. (Rounded point? Isn't that an oxymoron? Military Intelligence? Jumbo shrimp?) I have some water slide paper for my laser printer, so that part is covered. Thanks for your offer though, lavmonga. So if I'm able to put the bass together, I can start on a few more covers this weekend as well, along with the "Leafenbacker" logo.

No progress today, other than watching the tung oil finish cure
