I simply wonder if a sharp edge will cause a problem of your palm/hand/fingers hitting it and being uncomfortable.

I mention it because a few weeks ago I used a bass I don't normally use and as I was picking (finger and with a plectrum), my hand kept hitting the square edge of the neck pickup, which extends past the width of the strings, and it was very uncomfortable and potentially injury causing.

I'm sure some of it could be avoided with using a different technique when using that bass. However, it may be something for you to consider.

I hope you don't mind the suggestion.

I know that you are looking to replicate the original with a little artistic liscense. As the leaf clusters have Acorns on them have you considered giving the acorns and leaves a subltle variation of autumnal colours by using stains or dyes on them? it may make them jump from the background colour a little more. Come to that have you considered how you are going to finish this project? final buff on those leaves may be awkward if you want anything other than a matt finish.

I am really enjoying this post, it shows you dont need to be a professional carver to achieve stunning results.

Actually, yes. I may have the leaves and acorns brushed with some tint. Once I have them set, I'm sending pictures to a pro for some possibilities. Either way, I'll finish it with nitro, and I'll have to have a matt finish on the leaves. I won't have the patience to polish them.

... so, when songs are on the same line, does that mean medley/blend? And are you going to use your Performer-style bass? My fave's on the list would be Ohio, Revolution, I Put a Spell on You, and Moondance.

Heh, no, when they're on the same line, it means that somehow, the carriage return didn't copy and paste correctly :P

So far, the only medley are the two Cream tunes, Sunshine of your Love and White Room.

For the audition, I used my Ibanez P-Bass. I figured for old school rock, the P-Bass offered the right tone. I've been practicing the tunes over the last few days with the Reformer, but I'm not sure its tone really fits. It's very "Rickish". Even my Fender Dimension is a bit too bright for most of these songs. I may just stick with the Ibanez, or build a PJ.

A lot of these are songs I used to play back in the day. Yes, most are pretty easy, though a few of them have some unexpected changes. I'm looking forward to band practice this weekend.

These parts have been sitting for a week or so, but I just haven't found the time to work on this build.

I'd really like to try winding a pickup - I got two types of magnets, alnico 5 and neodymium, the 44 gauge magnet wire, and the bobbin flatwork material.

I also got the jack and jack plate, so once I install that, I'll be able to rout out the control cavity. I also got the mini type 500k pots, which should fit easily.

I still have to order the tremolo bridge, but bought a Fender Precision for use with my new band instead. The neck hasn't arrived yet, so there's still some time for that.

I might build a new PJ body for this at some point from the extra maple I have...

Thanks again for all the interest and comments. Regarding the binding, I was never a fan. I don't plan on using any binding on this project. Just a mild round over per the 4001S or V63/C64 style.

I'm hoping to move forward on this in the next week or two. The neck should be coming soon from Carvin.

Been planning on doing a bass build. I was going Fenderesque because plans were so easy to get. But today I was doing some CAD work on a Ric file and completed some plans to make templates out of. Then I see this thread.

The "furniture" look would be a blessing for that one I posted pictures of. To me, it looks like a puppy walked around the edge of it, leaving a trail of yesterdays dinner as it went... :atoz:
Waaaay too far from the original to be beautiful.

Who was your supplier for those alnico magnets, and what size are they? I haven't seen many suppliers for larger diameter magnets like those in small quantities, so I'm curious...
Nice bass, too. I always like seeing Ric-influenced DIY builds! I may have to have a go myself some time.
