Leak? Fender / Squier Meteora Bass

I just got off the phone with Fender.
Me: "Hi, good morning. Mack O'Brian here, I'm calling for Tim Commerford about the new Player Plus Active Meteora bass."
Fender: "Good morning, Mack. This is Dave. What can I do for you?"
Me: "Well, we're really interested in the new Meteora bass and we'd like to get a jump on things. You know, buy two or three ASAP. I was hoping you could help us."
Fender: "The Meteora? Sorry, we stopped making them. They just weren't selling."
Me: "I'm talking about the new Meteora bass. I just talked with Tony from Chicago Music Exchange and he says they were supposed to be available next month."
Fender: "I don't know any Tony from CME. Are you sure someone's not pulling your leg?"
Me: "No, I've known Tony for fifteen years. He says he already has a display model but he can't actually put it on the floor and list it until you guys give him the go-ahead."
Fender: "Hey, I'm sorry, Jack. I don't know what to say. We have no plans for a Meteora bass. We do have a few Rascals sitting around in storage if you do want something different."
Me: "It's Mack, not Jack!"
I was just about to hang up when I heard a voice in the background.
"Dave, we have some doughnuts and coffee down in the break room."
Then, Dave must've put the phone to his chest but I could still hear him.
"It's another call from someone asking about the new Meteora bass!"
Couldn't quite make out the response, but it sounded like "Get rid of him and get rid of him now. This could mean your job!"
Anyway, Dave comes back on the line and says "Hey, thanks for your call, Mack Drop us an email if you're interested in those Rascal basses," and before I could say another word, he hung up on me!
I tried to call back but they actually blocked my number!
Damned suspicious, if you ask me.

I see a lot of "Is this Fender real or fake" threads around here.
So, is this real or something someone put together, whether it was wishful thinking or just for a joke?
Sorry, but I find it hard to believe Fender would reintroduce a failed/discontinued model as a bass, and even harder to believe they'd go with a color that I've heard nothing but disparaging remarks about.
I know for a fact that it's real. Although nothing about this was supposed to be released yet.
