Breaking it down, the RW series was such a success receiving really good reviews from owners that this feature version is the perfect next step in that direction. The RW's were/are around that price so if that is the actual price it is in line regardless of where it's made. They still sell used for close to $1k. You have to gauge such looking at the whole company, which has losses in one area and gains in another economically and balances it all at the end of the day. Consider the Starcaster bass - not exactly a huge success there.

Very good point about making a 'top of the line' model for a very positively reviewed group of basses. Might be the first of many, and they are GREAT playing basses for the money.

As much as I want to see and play one (ASAP), and probably would want to buy one because I've always been interested in the RW J's - the only drawback is that once this 'unique' looking bass is out there being sold, it will start to be pretty common or at least less special. (another pink Flee bass ) Other than that, I'm still in the queue.

I do agree that the RW offerings are probably Fender's best playing basses for the $$. Lots of bellyaching about the relicing, which I understand completely and actually agree with. That is, until I got a RW P, and it is actually better than pre-CBS Fenders I've owned (bold statement, but true). Glad to see the line getting extended. Waiting for an Olympic White/rosewood '62 P. And waiting.

I can't blame Fender for trying to to get over a grand for a MIM. If Lakland, Warwick and others were getting it for Korean basses. Why wouldn't they try for Mexican basses. Fact is, Mexican basses are made quite well. I'll put my Mexican P up against a recently played Korean Lakland P any day.
As the manufacturing process gets better and better in ANY country, the quality of the product only goes up and country of origin no longer MN matters. I just wish my gear snob guitar player knew this.

i was going through the Fender website yesterday night, checking all the basses they have, when I saw this bass. I googled it, but it seemed like nobody knew about this replica that Fender was selling, so I figured it was new, and when I checked the link again today, the site disappeared. Faded Shell Pink. I'll say, it's faded until it isn't even pink anymore!
Other than that, it looks better than the hardly roadworn 50's P basses, which are hardly roadworn at all.
Price is pretty good, too.

1k for MIM is pretty good? Should be 599.00

Oh yes Olympic white (maybe slightly yellowed) and rosewood. Really hope this is a trend. I love matte finishes and the Road Worn series generally go in that direction. Not a fan of shiny basses, although I own a couple. Love not worrying about my Road Worn's finish and hate worrying so much about my American Standard brushing up against ANYTHING. Dulled finishes, yellowed whites and worn necks...pure bliss for me. Different strokes...

Looks like it's using the stacked tone/volume knobs that were last seen in the early to mid-1961 Jazz Bass. The three-knob control was introduced in December 1961. That would be interesting to play around with.
