Least favorite bassist?

My least favorite would have to be the black bass players trying out gear at my local guitar center. For as much as I hear the words "groove" and "soul"; these guys exhibit none. All they play is some complicated slap pop with alot of percussives in there. No smoothness of groove, kinda like some awkward beginner on speed. Wheres the funk?

So....you're cool with it if there were non blacks playing like that at your local GC? Or is it just a black thing? Just curious.

Jaco - Everything I've ever heard or seen him play is pointless, self indulgent noodling. I get the feeling that this guy couldn't find the pocket if his life depended on it. He swayed around like a Weeble onstage, and most of the time appears to need a bath. How he got to be so revered I'll never know - must be that "tortured artist" crap.

...you have much to learn, young grasshopper.

...so much.

Mona Lisa - why do you think she-he smirks the way he-she does. Everyone else is cool! They have a good job, make money and get to do what we wish we think we could do - butt we have more time on our hands to be on TB bashing the ones we wish we could be. I'd give my left breast to be wenzt/fieder, can you imagine all the guys they gets!!! And the GC comment?? what's that all about?

you :)
but seriously, just the calssics for me, pete wentz (especially after who he married recently), fieldy and paul mccartney

Some of you guys are really starting to scare me. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that those who disregard Pastorius and McCartney do not enjoy those respective genres of music to begin with, so to gripe about their playing is very ignorant.

I bet there's a TalkSax forum somewhere with a thread about how overrated John Coltrane is as a player, so as always, whatever.

I said blacks because thats all I've seen playing slap at my local guitar center. The whites I've seen just play crappy "pop punk". The point was that I'm white and play bass and have been told I don't have that "soul" factor. But the whole three times I've seen black players in there; there funk was'nt smooth at all. So I guess that makes me racist? I'm the racist funk fan!

As someone who avoided Korn and Nu Metal at all costs, I had to use a little youtube to understand the Fieldy hate, and I'm now onboard, he sounds terrible.

I've never really liked Adam Clayton, I like early U2 and some of his lines are really fun to play but in interviews I've read of him, he's always come across as a real dick. Also feels like the weakest link in a mega band.

With all due respect - at almost 50 years old, with 33 years of playing under my belt and with having tried to listen to his music countless times, it's highly unlikely that I'm suddenly going to see the light and accept Jaco as my savior. While it is true that I'm no fan of fusion OR straight jazz, I have always been able to acknowledge a players ability, technique, hairstyle... whatever. Marcus, Berlin, Hamm and Prestia are not influences (or to be found on my iPod), but they are players who have made my ears stand up even though I don't dig their style of music. Jaco, however has always left me cold.

I don't know...are you?

Well, you said it all right there....I guess you are. But I don't hate ya...we are what we are.

Funk is very subjective, what might be funk to me may not be to others. To me, funk is the vibe.

I believe you have only watched clips of him on Youtube?

Check out his self-titled debut album. I thought the same about Jaco based on the Youtube clips, but after my bassteacher played me some of the stuff from the album, I got the urge to buy it and I realized why Jaco is, well Jaco. :)

Well, taking it Victor Wooten is a "model bassist", then I guess I hate evaryone, except for him, Marcus Miller, Stu Hamm, Pastorius.... You know the names :)

No, but really...the WORST bassists are:
1. Pete Wentz, and his band sucks as much as he does.
2. Gene Simmons. Do I really have to explain myself?
3. Fieldy. Again, no comments needed.
4. Mikey Way, bassist for My Chemical Romance. I believe he was the one who inspired the "four-note-per-song" trend found nowadays in most hardcore bands. He disappoints me.
