Lefties why didn't you start playing a righty?

What I find interesting is for me, a right handed person, why do I use my left hand to do the complicated part of playing bass? If you think about it the fretboard part of playing requires much more ability. :confused:

If I pick up my bass and try to play left handed it sounds like I never touched one before in my life. Anytime I want to remember what it's like to be a n00B, that is all I have to do. :) Kind'a humbling really.

I don't wanna sound like a jerk, but I don't know why they make left handed basses. They are not as accommodating with other things... no cars with the stick on the left hand side, etc. etc. I have a lot of respect for you lefties who just toughed it out righty.

Frankly now that I think about it you are right. Why not make left handed pianos too?

This subject was beaten to death recently, with the right-handed players saying "it makes no difference" and the left-handed players saying "the hell it doesn't." I'm not sure you're going to do more than stir the anthill this time around.:rollno:

Check this out at NPR. There was actually a book written about left handed guitar players.

I read somewhere that a historian theorizes that the first guitar maker may have been a lefty. Everyone else emulated his guitars so the masses are actually playing left handed and the supposed lefties are actually the correct ones. ;)

But wait, I am right handed but I play the complicated part of playing bass, fretting, with my left hand. How does that make sense? Shouldn't it be easier for me to fret with my right hand?

When I first started playing, I told the guy who was helping me learn that I was left handed. He flipped the bass lefty for me and I couldn't play at all. It felt so unnatural and uncomfortable. So I flipped it around and played righty.

I do everything left handed... except bass playing. It just feels like it is supposed to.

I'm a lefty in everything I do except when playing bass.

Why?

'Cause that's how my grandfather taught me to hold the thing first time I ever held one.

Far as I'm concerned, it always made me a stronger player on the fretboard.
