Legion SSB-212L Cabinet Review

That 212 legion cab IMHO, sounds as good as the Avatar 212 does. It doesn't have quite as much SPL, but it is fairly close. The Legion has to be pushed with a little more watts, to get same volume level as the Avatar. But it will take at least 700. Thats what I pushed mine with, and it liked all 700. No weird noises or signs of X-max, that I could hear. You would be better off with a 2 ohm load for that head though. The Yamaha is a good head, but I think they sound better at the full 500 watts, myself. But then I like to play loud.

Not saying it about your cab/drivers, but a lot of people don't seem to discern well when xmax has been fully used; as the input level climbs the midrange and treble response increase but lower end does not. What almost anybody CAN HEAR is the sound of xlim/xmech which is when the driver actually hits a backplate somewhere beyond full useful excursion.

A LOT of drivers used in bass cabs hit xmax by one half their RMS rating if the signal actually has content in that bass range. But they often can squeak by without hitting xlim/xmech beyond that 1/2 figure.

Follow-Up to Legion 212 purchase:

The tweeter stopped working a couple of weeks after I got the cab. I emailed MSC and they issued me a RMA#. I overnighted the tweeter to them. About two weeks later I hadn't heard anything, so I sent them an email. A week later I get a response saying nothing was wrong with it and it will ship out "today or tomorrow". Nothing wrong? It doesn't work! OK, send it back. Anyway, that was almost a month ago. I have emailed them 3 or 4 more times in the last month and they simply don't reply.

So, I have a cab with a hole and wires sticking out where the tweeter should be. I guess I'll have to just write it off and find a replacement tweeter somewhere else. I'm sure as hell not going to send the cab or crossover in for testing!

Good little place to shop if nothing goes wrong. Good luck if you have a problem with anything...

Follow-up to the follow-up...

Last Thursday, they finally asnwered my email and claimed that DHL lost the last one that was shipped, although they wouldn't give me the tracking information. A replacement would ship "tomorrow". Well, that was 8 days ago and it doesn't take 8 days to get from Colorado to Texas.

I just can't get on board with a place that NEVER answers their phone and only answers about 1 in 10 emails.

I hate to say it, but I deeply regret buying this cab. They sound great, but forget about customer service if you need anything! They are apparently a drop-shipper only and could care less if you're a happy customer.

OK guys, this thread finally made me pull the trigger last November. Yesterday I finally finished all the retrofitting. I replaced the wood screws that held the speaker (3 out of 8 were stripped on each speaker) with T nuts. I found a 50 pack on eBay for $15. I also removed the jack plate and replaced both with new metal plates like the ones described above (2 for $9.00 at vidsonix).
I also removed the horns and switched the speaker wire to 12 gauge. The baffleing was sooooo cheesy I pulled it out also. I can honestly say with my MM HD 130 I've found my sound. 1 cabinet does the job nicely, 2 kick ass. I use both 4 and 5 string basses and these baby's handle them effortlessly. With both cabinets these baby's move some air.

I think now they are using agathis ply for construction, any body got one of these?? BTW they weigh about 55lbs each.

Sounds like you did a great job with the cabinet - I still maintain that these are pretty much the best thing out there for the money. Really tough to beat a decent-sounding 2x12 for less than $200. The negatives are easily found - cheesy jack plate, less than perfect attention to detail during construction, and so-so customer service. However, even if you wind up spending 25-50 bucks retrofitting the thing, you're still more than $150 better than an Avatar...and you still sound just as good.

About a year ago I bought 2 of the Knight Warrior 12"ers and a pair of horns and built a pair of mains w/ them. I will tell you , they sound great as a full range main speaker and can take alot of power. I also thought the Music Supply Centers 212 bass cab would be a good one to try, but I really love the LineX coating, so I went w/ Avatar. Dang black carpetted cabs just dont hold up too well. We have a pair of Yamaha Club V 15" mains, and I beleive that my homemade 12' mains hold there own against the Yammies.
