I would say he wrote some great songs, and played a mean rhythm guitar on the bass. Sounds like a pretty good musician to me. Technical wizard? Nah, that's not who he wanted to be.

How many million people fit a similar description? Seems easily attainable to anyone healthy and willing enough.

But there he was with a 50 year career, a ton of tours, millions of records sold, and a statue.

Right there is about as good of an argument as you're going to get. I worry that sometimes many musicians do not factor in just how important creativity is into being a "real musician". Lemmy is among the best musicians, not because he could play in odd time signatures or read scales to you from memory, but because his playing inspires many, many on this forum, to pick up a bass and rock out like he did.

Right there is about as good of an argument as you're going to get. I worry that sometimes many musicians do not factor in just how important creativity is into being a "real musician". Lemmy is among the best musicians, not because he could play in odd time signatures or read scales to you from memory, but because his playing inspires many, many on this forum, to pick up a bass and rock out like he did.

That’s not a measurement for performing music. Mother Theresa surely inspires many people in all sorts of fields, that doesn’t make her excellent in those fields.
