Les Claypool has some serious chops but...

A friend of mine has a '78 242 with a 3.0 litre straight six from a 960. Threw a computer controlled injection system on it and some homebuilt stuff like exhaust, manifold++, makes about 270 horse. With Bilstein shocks, Yokohama streetslicks and a limited slip diff that thing hauls some serious ass. Gotta love old swedish steel.
They made a mistake switching to FWD. I was really close to buying a 242 GT, but it needed more rust repair than I was comfortable with.
Those GT's are beyond awesome. Rust wouldn't be a problem over here though, you can find Volvo parts everywhere, and they're dirt cheap. Probably not so easy to come by in your parts.
I liked "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" and "Tommy the Cat" when they came out and I saw the videos on some local UHF video show. I bought the album and thought it was too goofy. Since then everything I've heard from him sounds goofy to me. I think the guy has a good sense of humor, and he's a talented bassist in the technical sense, but his music doesn't speak to me.
I like Les. In '91, I heard Leo Kottke say he was listening to Primus' new album, Seas of Cheese. I went out and bought Peculiaroso and Seas of Cheese. Since then I have purloined others, namely; Pork Soda, Tales from the Punchbowl, the Brown Album, and Miscellaneous Debris but no more Kottke. So no. I don't feel the same.
I reckon the music is a lot like some of the edgier jazz forms - like hard bop and free jazz - Whenever you're feeling 'up' the stuff can really entertain, get the blood pumping. But, if you're feeling a little low it can help to bring on the angst and negativity. In '91, Primus was some of the freakiest sh*t I'd ever heard. Sat me square on my backside - I wasn't expecting it at all. (I led a sheltered life
) But, I soon grew to love it. It's not for everyone. I'm certainly not obsessed. And I know where you're coming from.

Don't know whether to move this, since it's veered off topic. On topic, those who don't like Primus, have you checked out Antipop? The songwriting on that album is pretty solid, much more than the earlier albums.
I actuall thinky Antipop is my least favorite album. Maybe exactly because it's an objectively more "well written" album? I don't know. Guess I just enjoy the "weirdness" of Primus, my fav is probably The Brown Album.

No one ever mentions Electric Grapevine as a favorite tune so i will.
Primus is WAY better live than on a studio recording. Some songs get extended jams thrown in and that's when they truly shine IMO. If you can't see them live (or don't want to) check out a DVD called "Hallucino-Genetics" from their live tour in 2004.
It's OK to not like certain bassists or bands and still recognize the talent behind them. I've only heard or seen Victor Wooten and Jaco on YouTube and even though I admit they have massive talent, I'm not downloading their stuff or anything.

I feel the same. My friend is a huge Primus fan and sends me links constantly. I listen to them for the good musicianship, but I just don't like
the music or get into it at all.
Dug Les and Primus since I heard a demo tape pre "Suck On This" release... bought the first 3 releases as they hit the market, then Sausage, then I really felt they had recorded all they had to say. I always thought Ler was a pale imitator of Todd. In the last decade, I gave them a listen again and while there is a LOT of filler, I dig Les and all his wacky bands for the most part.
Now Volvos... my first was a 1969 P1800 (black with red interior), next up a 1981 242 in green like the lowered one pictured, next up was a dark blue 1985 245 wagon, then silver w/ black leather 1978 262 Bertone I had planned to put a V8 in, a white with blue interior 1992 740 wagon, and finally a silver with grey leather 1998 V70 wagon. Now I drive a 20 year old full sized Blazer

Jerry Was a Racecar Driver changed my life! Les and Geddy are pretty much why I play bass today. Les really opened up things for me, things I didn't even know were possible. I actually liked the rawness of Frizzle Fry the best, and I could actually play some of those songs. After Pork Soda they lost me though. I think the well ran dry. I recently discovered Les Claypools Frog Brigade and their cover of the entire Pink Floyd Animals album done live and that's one of the best things I've heard in my life.
