Let me hear some Precision rock tone that cuts through!

seems like most the time the pbass tone sits underneath the mix, and its only the stingrays and occasionally the jazz that cuts through more. And while the pbass beds a mix really well in recordings it usually gets buried live. Recommend me some cutting pbass sound!

I have heard of : Rancid, anti flag, the clash, janes addiction, blink 182(not a fan of his tone, really).

great bassist, and yeah he cuts through pretty well considering he uses fingers n flats.

But im lookin for someone with more of a grindy p tone as opposed to clanky

Classic, but he cuts through just fine.

IMO, the P bass doesnt cut through really. it BREAKS through. it pushes its way through
with the right EQ'ing and the right amp, you can cut through anything with some mid-control.
P basses are a force to be reckon'd with really.

Years ago David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd fame) put out a CD that was very good if you like his style of guitar playing (I do). I think the Bass player on it was Squire, not sure what bass he played on that CD but it cut thru so much it got rather annoying. It was almost like he was competing with Gilmour for lead tone. I've never been a fan of over done bass and like anything else, cutting thru can be over done. I've always leaned to a more supportive bass line and fundamental role in the band. A prominant bassline or occasional opening riff or solo is always great but I kind of like to leave it there. Maybe that's why I gravitate towards Precision basses.

Anyway, neat question by the OP, looking forward to some of the youtube postings of Pbass cut thru in a mix - maybe it'll change my outlook on the topic.

in most cases, the P bass can really only "cut" through with a pick. Im an avid p bass user, and i usually have to do so.
to me the P bass is the ultimate "felt" bass. its just so THERE!
listen to Pino palladino's work with The John Mayer trio. he can be heard, and mostly felt, and he uses fingers.
the problem with P bass and recording, is that its hard to be heard with fingers.
but live, its a much much much different story. The P bass is a beast.

What exactly do you mean - cutting through? Sitting underneath? Did Berry Oakley cut or play underneath?
