wasn't duff's bass a jazz bass special with a p/j combo? and not just a straight up p-bass?
Kid Dynamite from Philadelphia. Some great Precision tone. From live pictures that I've seen I think he uses a 57 Reissue with a SVT-VR
agreed. a great rock bass tone. rocket queen is probably my favorite off that album.
If you have trouble cutting through a mix live with a P bass, then you're doing it wrong. My main gigging basses have been my american P bass and my modified MIM jazz with a p pickup and I've never had a problem cutting through and standing out in the mix with either of them.
Most of my favorite bassists have used P basses, and I've never had a problem hearing them be it on recordings or live. I would look for some examples of my favorite p bass tones right now but I'm in bed and my girlfriend is asleep, so I can't play music at a loud enough volume to pick out good examples.

Probably my favorite p-bass player. More of a rounded p tone without the trebley clank.

Well it was a p/j with the selector switch and the tbx circuit, so who knows when he was using which pickups. The story that he swapped the bridge pickup to a Duncan would seem to indicate that he did use the bridge pickup at least sometimes. That definitely helps cut through but it still sounds most like a p and it's really just a matter of mids anyway. Not sure if the op was looking to continue on the p vs pj debate.
