Thanks Jeff. Maple Leaf Gardens is a building with a lot of architectural style and the little sculpture of it just glows. And then you read the names etched on the sides - Beliveau, Keon, Orr, Dryden, Orr (Robert Orr! Who's that?), Bernie Parent two years in a row, Lafleur, Robinson and Gainey from that magical Montreal dynasty, Trottier, Goring, Bossy and Smith from Al Arbour's Islanders, Messier and Gretzky, Patrick Roy three times, in '86, '93 and 2001 - the images swirl around in my head.

I just heard some interviews on the CBC Radio news with a bunch of volunteers who showed up downtown with shovels and brooms to help clean up. Young men and women, an older guy on disability and a Capilano University Prof who recognized some of his students from last night's footage.

All Canucks fans, all really embarrassed at the vandals and their impact on Vancouver's image, all good people.

I'm a long-time hockey fan with more than one team on my "like" list and, to be honest, Vancouver has never really been on that list. (It's probably a western Canada football thing -- I was born in BC and have an army of family out there, but cheer for the LIONS? I'd rather choke....) But I started out the finals looking for Vancouver to win this thing. But something happened -- the Boston Bruins made me admire them. It's a matter of opinion, but I thought they were clearly the better team for the last 5 games of the series...

But really, what true hockey fan can be upset that the home of Orr and Esposito and Cheever and all the rest has finally won another Stanley Cup? I think it's glorious.

But now that Winnipeg is back in the game it's all Jets, baby!

It's very strange what's going on with the name. SO MUCH speculation, all kinds of it from people well-placed to know, and none of it gibing or correlating...

If it's not the Jets, I think it'll be the Falcons (there's an ancient connection to the name, going back almost a century.) But if they think we won't be wearing our Jets jerseys, they got it wrong...

"Moose" was always an inappropriate name for a Manitoba team, by the way. Sure, we've got plenty of moose around, but nothing like what they've got down in Minnesota in the Chippewa forest, or almost anywhere out east in the maritimes. They've got so many moose in Newfoundland, with so many bad associations with car accidents, that one of the first moves they made in obtaining the Moose was to state that the nickname had to go...

With the exception of protests for economic oppression, I've never understood looting.

The local team won/lost! The trial results were not what I feel just! The cops beat someone who I don't think should have beaten!

I'm going to break into Sears and grab myself a toaster!

And a battery powered shaver!

Again, the guys doing the looting and burning were the professional anarchists from all over who attend events like the Economic Summits in Toronto and Seattle with the expressed intention of causing civil unrest. Terrorists, in a word, and they should be dealt with harshly.

I kept on thinking, as I watched guys looting The Bay, Sears and London Drugs, that a few live rounds would make these guys stop for good...and I'm a ****ing peacenik! :(

I never thought that they were looting because of the game, even though the "mainstream" news regurgitators won't let that go.
The idea of professional anarchists is a little odd/lame though, seems counter intuitive to have organized anarchy, seems like a bunch of lazy @$$holes to me.

The amount of cultural history in Ontario and Quebec is amazing especially hockey history. My wife (who's roots are from Trois-Rivières) and I were there for my 40th to see the world cup games (during the lock-out.) We spent 2 weeks in and around Quebec city and Montreal, great music, food, history and hockey. The old forum is a mini mall complex now but they've kept a ton of artifacts and photos. We finished with 3 days in Toronto to see the HHOF. Awesome vacation!!

I think you've called it right, they were just simple @$$holes. In the face of extremely convincing video evidence of some of the violent agitators at the Toronto G20 crossing police lines and not being arrested but rather being sheltered by the police Jake needs to be a lot more careful with his comparisons. I haven't seen any evidence that the perpetrators of yesterday's Hockey Riot were anything other than unorganized local hooligans.

Not even back in the days when we sang "Hey, Hey LBJ" outside the US Consulate in downtown Toronto or marched with Martin Luther King from Central Park to the UN Building. Geez, that was a long time ago...

Don't get me wrong I do believe there was a small minority of people causing trouble who would pull this crap at any large gathering. I must say though I'm extremely skeptical of articles that offer up information as fact with no real substantiation. The craig's list posts are interesting I guess but without knowing who they really came from are meaningless. Critical objectivity, yes?

What I really don't want to see is people passing this event off as the major responsibility of these creeps you see at all large gatherings. I honestly believe that the vast majority of real trouble makers here were hooligans of the same stripe as disrupt European and South American soccer matches not anarchists plotting to destroy society.

I'm also considering maybe there's some moral culpability with some part of the huge number of onlookers who gave these exhibitionists a passive audience for their "performance". The thousands of citizens there on the street could have moved away from the action or better still acting as a group could have put a quick end to this before it achieved any momentum. Regardless of who you think the actual brick throwers were we as a city have to take collective responsibility for this. And then at some point we as individuals have to stop pointing fingers and look to ourselves for solutions to what seems to be an ongoing problem.

Do you think the people who started the riots would have done it if Vancouver had won? They don't seem to be actual hockey fans.

Heard on local radio today, that Vancouver is the odds on favorite to win it all next year. Long off and regular seasons ahead, but they were at the top of the list. IIRC, Boston was 3rd or 4th.

We'll see about next year but the best team certainly won it this year.

I think after the loss the mood of the crowd here was such that they were more willing to standby and watch than if Vancouver had won. I don't think you would have seen cars burned and looting with a win.
