Too late, folks, already gave him a hard time about it, but he's made up his mind. 
Thing is, even tho I'd opt for no pickguard myself, I do think a pickguard would look cool on this bass... not out of place at all.

I am going with a universal route (P/J, reversed P/J, J/J), so I am afraid that a pickguard is required. I didn't want to do it either, but I have to say, on Sadowsky's, the quilt with a pickguard is a pretty cool look.

I have to say that I am torn. On one hand I LOVE the look of a quilt top Sadowsky with a pickguard like this one. But, I also go gah gah over something like Major greenburst.
I think I have several excellent examples of quilted Maple, here's one of my favorites (Bone Avatar 6):
