Thanks! They sound amazingly nice and warm, to the point where we have used them to record. Not at all bad considering I got them for $300 each including moulded HS cases. Gotta love Peavey

Tom, IMHO, if it was my bass, as much of a huge J fan as I am, it'd be all about a single route P/J with no guard. No question, no doubt, no looking back, no regrets. Besides, you've already got an INCREDIBLE JJ Sadowsky, but even if you didn't, I'd still feel the same.tombowlus said:

That is a STUNNING top. No way I could bear to cover it up, even tho, no question, it'd still look very nice... just not as nice...

Tom, I have to go with everyone else on this one. To cover up such a work of art just seems, not wrong, but not right. That is way too beautiful to hide under a pickguard.

I have to say, I really like the Sadowsky's with quilt maple tops, 59' burst, and a pickguard - which is why I asked for that setup in the first place - but that particular top does beg to be seen in its full glory.Tom.

This straight on shot doesn't show off the quilting quite like that other shot, but I am really happy with the way it turned out!
This doesn't make the decision any easier, though. That thing would look great with a pickguard, IMHO, but I think I might find myself pining for that quilt, and constantly trying to use my X-ray vision to look through the pickguard if I covered it up.

Contact a couple of the popular pickguard makers and get a quote for a custom pickguard that's transLUCENT. Basically, a "ghost" pickguard so you still get that effect, but the quilt still shows thru. I guarantee materials exist that will be suitable. It just might cost a bit, being a one up with non-standard materials, but considering the price range of this bass and how significant the feature will be, it's a non-issue cost-wise.
If it didn't work out, yeah, you have the screw holes, but you could always then go to transparent, which might also be an primary choice option as well.

Another concern I have with the "no pickguard" approach to a J-style bass is how you lay out the knobs. I don't like the chrome knob covers with no pickguard, and I am not usually a fan of the "four in a row" look, either. So, Roger is going to take some shots for me with the knobs laid out either in a diamond pattern (like the 24F basses) or following the curve of the body. Hopefully, he can also snap a few shots with a pickguard on it.
