Let's spread some musical misinformation

An important clue in identifying "Martha" may be hiding in plain sight.

It is apparent from this map that she once was a producer of fine wines.........

Marthas are natural born folksinging Wainwrights. It's genetic. In days gone by, they'd have a job for life, building, fixing, and fitting cartwheels and wagons. Bet you didn't know that. There's almost no call for their skills these days and many have hung up the tools for good. Some keep their hand in fashioning garden ornaments or sets for theater and film. Marthas are also natural born French speakers, and tuneful too, which is a real plus where I come from.

You've never loved a woman until you've loved a Martha. Some say it's all about the bass. That's pretty deep. Others say it's about any funky fried fish or savory pudding. They've been watching too much Cable and have missed the point entirely.

While we're on the subject, watch out for Berthas. Berthas, although closely related to Marthas, can't scale or gut a bass to save their lives and consequently are a complete waste of time. Don't bother with Berthas. They'll just bamboozle you and then screw you sideways 'til your bass rots and turns to mush. They're all rappers - every single one.

They'll dreadlock your hair, if you have any, and it will all fall out or turn gray within a year. Steer clear of Berthas, if you know what's good for you. Anyway, they're illegal in most states and territories - something to do with Tritones and Hops and Corrupted Carrot-juice. Makes no sense to me either so don't ask.

The girl serving beer in the picture, unfortunately is not Martha.

Her name is Gretchen. She used to work in Cuba, making Cuba Libras for Donald Fagen when he would drop by the bar. The " Cuban Breeze" is a creative concoction that Donald Fagen experimented with, using a Cuba Libra as the base drink.

He writes about her in "The Goodbye Look"...

She is often confused with this girl.......a painting of a German girl that was often seen at
Oktoberfests and went by the name "Marta'......

Locals said that she could rival anything that classical composers ever produced.....

Allegedly The Beatles owned the only known transcripts of her work.......

Martha is a corruption of the word 'mother.' Among the hill tribes of the Cotswold's in Britain, throughout the Bronze Age, all women were named Martha. Your Martha was your wife. Few in England remember these stories of the Martha Cult or speak of the time when fettered and unfettered Marthas roamed the land, marauding and making merry and marrying at will. Centuries of stigma and public floggings have seen to that. All they really did was force all those Marthas underground.

One lone character, Martha Farquhar, a colorful television personality, kept the old tradition alive for the masses for many decades. He first came to prominence because he could bang on like nobody's business and could paint rustic murals with nothing but his beard and a tin of British paint. He said a lot of things, sang a lot of songs, but was fondest of saying, "I'm not just a Martha, I'm a Martha Farquhar." Quite the controversial type was our Martha.

Further evidence exists today, in the New Guinea Highlands, where the same tradition is still practiced although, with the introduction of Christianity by missionaries in the 15th Century, the name Martha has been changed to Mary. If you shout 'Hey Mary!' in the main street, every woman within earshot will turn and look straight at you. It's kinda fun.
