But you are aware of the orientation of the windings, aren't you? Northern hemisphere: clockwise, southern hemisphere: counter-clockwise.

That's exactly what happens. So always connect the old battery to the new battery before installing the new one. Transfer takes about a second per song for modern alkaline batteries. Old fashioned zinc cells need up to three minutes per song to transfer.
