Rickenbacker only used two to try to create a shortage to clamp down on the number for Fender. It's why Fender made his first guitars without any truss rods at all - he couldn't get them or make them out of bits of left over automotive parts, surplus surgical supplies or random bent pieces of metal. People think the scratch plates on Music Man basses looking like the hole in a toilet seat is an accident, but Leo scored a deal with a toilet seat manufacturer in Bakersfield in 1976...

Pickups for electrical instruments are wound from metal wire. For acoustic instruments nylon wire is used, which has the advantage of being 100% free of hum and noise.
