I've only seen one of the real old amps in a pawn shop years ago and I can't remember which it was. I hope it wasn't the 226A mentioned; though I believe it was the 600B.

FWIW, we featured Bob on the cover of Bass Gear Magazine issue #3, and this issue has a story on Bob and GK (even some gut shots of the 226A), an interview with Bob, and a full review of the Fusion 550.

Not sure how many of you guys also play upright, but the GK stuff has LONG been a staple for upright bassists too.

The 400rb & 800rb in particular have been used by more Rockabilly, Country, and other Roots music upright players for decades than almost any other amp.

I introduced myself to the GK tone by buying a brand new BL600 to use in my country band, and have been pretty damn blown away by the tone and volume I get from such an inexpensive head - I only paid like $260 for ths thing! ;)

I see an 800rb in my future for sure.

1. 1001RB Had the MKI version but factory modified
2. 200MB used as a head killer tone and usable thru an efficient ext speaker
3. 700RB MKI a distant third, mine threw sparks on occasion.

So my question is this- I had a 1001RB mk1 that had a green LED. It developed an issue with either the pre or power section, though I can't recall which at this time. Sent it to GC, and it was replaired with an upgraded set of components, the hallmark of which was a blue LED.
This amp is probably the best I've ever used- never ran out of headroom with it- just all around good, though not the same voicing as the 200mb so less ideal for EUB, but that's getting picky. So, I'm wondering if anyone else here on TB underwent a green to blue LED upgrade with a MKI 1001RB or perhaps with a 700RB. I see a lot of love for the MKIIs here, but not a lot for the previous generation. I'm wondering now, if I actually had the benefits of the MKII in my modded MKI. The mod was done around 2006 or 7 iirc.

So now I am wondering why I also like my LMII a lot:eyebrow:

I was about to post this amp for sale in local classifieds. Its #4 backup amp, so rarely gets used. I bought it new some years ago, shipped to my home from MF(iirc?) My new band I just joined is gonna rent a practice room so I will leave it there with a 210 cab for practice.

I had shutdown issues with this same amp a few years ago, so I stopped using it after 2 shops did not fix it. 3rd shop did something to it where it has not shutdown the many times I've used it since. It'll be a good practice amp in the new rehearsal room so I won't be luggin gear to and from each nite. Glad I can use it again, didn't really want to sell it. :smug:

OK, what's so smart about spending $1300 and carrying a 25lb amp, when the same job could be easily handled by the $600, 16.5lb 700rb-II??? Seems pretty stupid to me, to be honest - and *maybe* to alot of others...

A) Bragging rights. :D
B) It's actually 40 lbs., so it makes for a great pre/post-gig workout routine. :hmm:
C) Built-in overdrive channel.
D) The ability to power up to eight 8-Ohm cabs (in dual mono) and/or really large cabs when necessary.
E) Lower threshold for "hitting the rails" justl like the 700RB-II, but the flexibility to raise that for more headroom via simple "Bridge" switch.
F) No money left for a lighter head to carry around for the gigs that don't need the extras of the 2001RB. :D

Reasons D and E are the best justifications for owning a 2001RB even if you're normally only powering a small cab. And possibly Reason A. ;)

The Blue led would be the mark II preamp board. :)
