My Maruszczyk Jake L.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but about 4 years ago I bought a SamllGuitars.com mini P-bass, 24.5" scale 31.5" long 4.75 lbs, about $300. It's my go to bass. I only play 21 to 24.5" scale. It now comes with smaller guitar tuners to help with any neck dive.

I modified mine with flatwound strings and cosmetic changes.

i now have gas for tiny bass

A Wendler will run you $1200. Mine weighs 5.8 lbs. It's got a P pup in a soapbar in the middle and a piezo in the bridge. Usually frettless but he does fretted instruments too.

Personally, I'd be staying far from lightweight basses (under 3.5kg) with 4-inline headstocks.
What folks aren't telling you is the neck-dive issue.

Sure, they just put on a suede strap & a velcro shirt & it's just fine :p

I solved the neck-dive on my 4 in-line DIYs by using lightweight tuners and using a nontraditional location for the strap buttons. My slab bodied SCPB weighs just under 6 lbs and my J weighs just over 6 lbs. My MIJ Mustang modded with a lightwieght body weighs even less than they do. They all balance perfectly with no neck dive.

I turned over my whole quiver to focus on light weight four strings.

The Cirrus is a totally undervalued monster bass. Picked it up here in mint condition for $780 shipped with the original hard shell Peavey case. Weighs just over 8 lb.

The Dingwall Super P and AB-1 are just over 7lb and 7.5 respectively.

My shoulder, neck, and back thank me every time I pick one up.

I’m on a super light string exploration too. The Super P has .030 boomers, Cirrus: .035 D’Addario XL and the AB got DR Pure Blues VW set, 095-040.

Why work harder than you have to?

Hi all... I find now that I’m older and experiencing arthritis in my neck and shoulders I would like to find a good light weight, balanced bass. Wonder if any of you have purchased a light weight bass and what your thoughts are. Would probably be looking at a “ P “ but would not rule out a “ J “ Thanks for the help!

Under 7 pounds and only $70. You won't find a lighter or cheaper P bass. I own one and they don't sound the best but its super light and super cheap.

How light is your GSR100 EX bass? Under 7 pounds? I really need a light bass and also have been looking at the Ibanez Mezzo bass. 32" scale. Tried the bass at Guitar Center, but waiting for an under 7 pound one on Sweetwater. Some are at this sub 7 pound weight. The SR500 mahogany ones are also very light.

I don't have a scale at home. However, I have 2 Gibson SG's which are less than 7 lbs each and this bass is lighter than either one for sure (without the neck dive of an SG).

I just sold my heavier basses and put in an order for this Hofner Ignition Club bass. Will not be more than 5 pounds. I play mainly jazz, Latin, funk, etc., and I think this will be fine for what I do. Looking forward to it arriving, and, from what I read, this bass can produce a good variety of sounds.

Mine is 4.5 lbs. I use it with nylon tapes for those genres and more.

For that price you can almost get into a new G&L LB100 with the Empress wood body. Mine was 7.6 lbs.
I also just had a Maruszczyk build, a Jake L (chambered P bass) for $1450. It came in at just UNDER 7 lbs.

I bought this bass from Bob. Still have it. Zero neck dive, great sound. So light. You can find these on talkbass and reverb around 1k. Great p-bass sound.

Recently aquired a Geddy Lee Jazz. Weighed 9.3 lbs at purchase. Swapped all the hardware for lightweight stuff. Babicz bridge, hipshot ultralites. Now down to 8.6. Also going to swap the control plate to pickguard material. It was a simple process. Didn't wreck the integrity of the bass and can be easily reversed. A hardware swap wont fix all ills i.e. a 10 pounder and up but for a bass that's right on the edge it's a good option.

You can't have light weight and balance with a conventional bass design (some will disagree but they miunderstand what 'neck-heavy' means, it's not the same as 'neck-dive' which depends on strap friction), because there's a limit to how much weight you can remove from a neck while keeping it functional, so reducing the weight of the rest of the instrument then makes it even more neck-heavy (and almost all headed basses are neck-heavy). A P or J is even worse due to the huge headstock and giant tuners.
You very probably need a headless bass.

A lightweight P or J will usually be more unbalanced than a standard weight one.

Besides, if you have health problems you shouldn't support the weight on your shoulders anyway, removing a little weight won't help much. Play sitting, use a stand, a hip strap or at least a dual-shoulder strap.
