How is it that when comparing the large post to the small post, about about a 50% reduction in volume of the capstan is realized, yet the weight of the tuner doesn't change?

I think they're giving an approximation. I'll weigh them when they get here.
I got burned on some sealed Schallers (sort of a whirlybird button on them) that were advertised as 'Lite' and turned out to be 2 grams lighter than standard ones. I noted that in a review I did on the All Parts site. They stopped carrying those particular ones but I'm wary of anything Schaller considers 'lite' without a given weight.
The weights are available at Schaller's site, but that button you are talking about (I call a wave, you're calling whirlybird, we need to settle on a name) is a very heavy button. That button raises the weight of any tuner it's on substantially.

Especially when you don't use lightweight material for it. Silly me, assuming Schaller was at least the equal of Gotoh.
Tell me about it when the Gotoh plastic buttons start breaking and you can't get replacements.
I pay $92 for set of four GB350 (amazon) including shipping - these tuners you link at $17 each would be $68 plus shipping. Not that much of a savings. The weight is listed at 48 grams and I don't trust that since they don't specify different weights for different size shafts or different key types.
If you buy a set of those, please upload pics of them on an accurate (to tenths of a gram) scale.
For my money, I'd much rather pay $24 more and get the GB350 tuners and save the weight - plus I love the quality of the GB350 tuner.

I don't use the plastic button ones, just these:
...and these (for octave strings on my 12ers)
If they were to fail I'd supply replacements at no charge to my customers.
BTW, I use a lot of Schaller 471-8 bridges, the saddle length adjustment screws tend to break. I haven't had any luck getting replacements for those. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to how I can do that.
while on the same subject... have you ever weighted Gotoh 510 guitar tuners with any of their buttons (zinc, aluminum, wood, plastic)?
Those res-o-lites @39 grams, have plastic buttons, Gotoh even says so. Check out the statement by the weight.

Works for me for both the price and form factor.
The plastic button tuners on all three of my Harmony H-22s are completely intact and functional after 50 years. I think the Gotoh 350s should be good for at least half that.
I have a set of Schaller M4s I bought in 1966, the plating's pretty rough though...and one of the ears broke off a capstan...shoddy.
Interesting. Be sure to let us know what you think of them, especially at the price. Also interesting, 41 g for the Y key but 48 g for the cloverleaf? They don't look that much larger.
Yep. And from my experience they are great. I've whacked the head of my bass more times than I would like to admit, and they haven't even scratched, much less break. And appearance-wise, you'd never know they weren't metal. The plating is that good and that well-matched. (Mine are either the x-chrome or the x-nickel, I forget.)

I will. Something's definitely wrong with those numbers. They must be using Gibson/Epiphone for their spec sheets.

Here's the weights of Allparts lightweight tuners and also Hipshot's import, which according to the manufacturing mark was made in the same factory as the Allparts.
First all chrome from AllParts 1/2" shaft:
Hipshot all chrome import:
AllParts 3/8" shaft:
I like seeing a chrome gear instead of a logo. The shaft/key/gear appear to be the same on all three. Chrome is same quality and black powdercoat is gloss on the APs vs satin on HS imports.
As to durability they should be equal, since the guts are basically the same IMO. One nice thing on the Hipshot is a string post that's slightly tapered from the top that theoretically should help with getting a tight string wrap. The APs are just a straight cylinder.

I home roast and weigh my coffee for pulling espresso shots - my scale always looks like that too.
Hey guys, i just noticed Gotoh Carbon-o-Lite tuners, supposedly weighing 35.3g (without bushing). I don't know how much weight the bushing adds though.

These look really interesting. I shopped around and couldn't find them for sale in the USA. But I contacted bassstringsonline.com and he said he can order them in from Japan (some lead time and price may fluctuate with exchange rate depending on when you order). He's here on TB and a great place to buy strings and stuff.
