Incoming stuff and forthcoming release helped me trying to keep things under control - they're not, but anyway -, and parting with stuff i enjoyed, Thunder Knob is a great pedal for sure !
Now that there are some of these in the used market, does anyone know of a way to tell what run they are from? I picked up 2 2020s but dont know if they are from the preorder batch or the revised, and the seller doesnt know either.
Each unit has a serial number. LBA will know what serial number the revised version started at and which preorder units were sent in for the update.
The serial is only indicated on the warranty card and retail box with this particular product. I do have a record of which serials are unrevised preorders. There are only a small handful… maybe about 10 total unrevised, but I would need to check to confirm that. It’s super easy for the end user to determine this though. If you remove the PCB from the enclosure and look at the transformer, the unrevised versions are NOT mounted inside of a shielding can. The final version has a different core and IS mounted in a shielding can.

A double 2020s would be really cool, considering how well people say they stack.
It seems like the 2020s also do well if they are pushed with more gain. Mike, have you ever considered a version of the 2020s with a built in boost?

Yes, I briefly considered it, but I don't want to make pedals, so it's out of the question unless it's a set it and forget it box. Furthermore, I don't see a significant interest in the idea for me to justify the investment I would need to make to develop and produce such a product. It wouldn't cost less than buying 2 individual 2020S's, so what would be the point? If a boost is integrated it would certainly cost more than a pair of 2020S's. I figure a lot of people already own boost pedals. You can mix and match to find the best combo. If I put it all in one box you'd be limited to whatever boost I came up. That's just my take on it. I need to pick my battles (R&D projects) wisely. I'm designing a quality low budget mic preamp and finishing my Trinity design, but I'm also rebuilding, modding, and upgrading a 1993 AMEK Big analog console. Between that stuff and keeping up with my current product build quota, I have little to no time for pursuing anything else. If some other builder out there wants to try creating a boost with two 2020S's in it, I'll gladly sell the transformers direct.

We had an email conversation yesterday, I have a 2020S on the way right now, I plan to do several tests with it to see what it works well with.

This definitely has my attention, along with your tube DI that uses an LBA transformer. I have been looking at Sushi and LBA stuff for a while, a combination of the two could be the perfect thing to scratch that tube + transformer itch!
I was running my 2020 through an Xotic effects Xblender and it sounded incredible. I could blend the amount of the 2020 added to the loop, but it also had a volume and boost control as well as bass and treble controls. I ended up not using it due to it taking up too much pedalboard space. I'd be all about a tube/transformer/boost with (master volume) pedal in a reasonably sized box. Being able to push the signal on the tube and/or transformer but yet being able to keep it at unity gain would be sick.

I just checked a couple of mine (I had mixed up original and revised) and you don't even have to remove the PCB; if you shine a bright light up the long edges of the board and see something shiny and flat on both sides, that's the shielding can and you have a revised version. If you see something but it's not shiny and flat, you have the original (and if you would like to sell it, let me know--I like both for different flavours!)

I just found this thread trying to find out what the 2020 box was, read through all last night then ordered last two 2020ses on the site. My board is only a Caly76cd and Oracle fed by Sadowsky J. Looking forward to the seasoning.
I like what I hear. To me some more texture in midrange, maybe a bit more on top. I could also say improved clarity throughout the range. Will it be perceived in a live mix I have no idea yet.
