Lightweight cabinet recs

Check out Schroeder Cabs ....Right now running a Schroeder 12PL (12" B&C Neo Driver weighs 28 lbs) and a 12-12 L (Dual 12" B&C Neo Drivers weigh 38 lbs) Smokes most stuff I ever played.

BTW - the cab at the bottom is the 12-12 L and has a 12" mounted in the corner slot wedge. Super compact and small foot print. Although they don't advertise that model currently, they are still available for special order.

Each cab is 8 ohms, can be used independently or combined for a 4 ohm parallel amp load. Super High efficiency ratings (102 DB and 103 DB). And conservatively rated 600 watts and 800 watts RMS. 35 hz to 20K hz freq. response.

To add, my Barefaced Big Twin 2 was a blind purchase. Had no way of trying it anywhere. When I first got it, I was super impressed, the clarity of the speaker especially when rolling audio files through it was unbelievable.

All this clarity quickly got boring though. No matter what I did on my EQs could polish some of the inherent harshness, and reached the point when I was seriously considering buying a giant rack EQ with a very dense EQ field when it hit me: I am basically going to color the cab and what ever weight I lost on the cab, I am going to add in a rack now. The plain flat sound was honestly boring: Lifeless, no character, surgically precise, no punch... Honestly, no punch. Seriously, put any of these boutique cabs against an Aguilar DB or GK RBH and prepare to get your ass kicked.

OTOH I definitely had the most epic 5th string to date. In terms of sheer low end output. In reality, I greatly prefer the tightness and color of 5th string on my DB410 though.

The day I traded in my Big Twin 2 for an Aguilar DB410 and the second I first plugged in the DB41ß through my Aguilar AG500 - I almost cried of happiness. So there you go :)

Just my own opinion on first hand experience with these brands, as I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and is just that - only an opinion. YMMV.

I will just repeat my statement from my upper posts that a Vanderkley to my ears is still by far the best built cab among all these supercabs and the only one that can cope with oldschool SWRs, Aguilars and such.

P.S.: I have also tested an Aguilar SL112 and 212 and found it much more boring compared to the GS or DB series.

BTW had an Aguilar GS 12 cab for a practice studio set up for some time,

1st best thing I did with that cab was to get rid of the POS 12" Emenience driver and replace that with a 12" Beyma 12G40. Made a ton of difference.

Then next best thing was to sell it to a friend of mine, when that studio setting dissolved, and I didn't need another cab hanging around the house. He is gigging with that cab currently.

SWR GoLight cab used?

I believe there was a 4x10, 2x10 (GoLight JR) maybe a 1x15...and maybe the 4x10 (or a version of it) was a Marcus Miller signature cab...

Would be something to consider although not in the same tier as the Goliath series. There must be a reason why many brands still hold their heavy cabs as their top tier lines (EBS Pro-Lines, Ampeg Pro series, GK RBH, Aguilar DB and GS, Mesa Powerhouse series, etc.)

First of all, that eminence "POS" driver was too weak for you, as indicated by your move to a 500W rated 12'' speaker. Second, switching a speaker in an Aguilar cab doesn't improve things, but makes it worse. These cabs hold their price because everything in those cabs has been thoroughly tested, calculated and build to work as a whole - case and speaker.

You would love the GS212 sound. That is, if you are into more modern voiced cab. My vote still goes to the DBs.

I would recommend the OP checks out Aguilar, Bergantino and Barefaced cabs. These are the best sounding cabs I've tried and owned in the last 10 years.

But while you are looking. . . . get a trolley.

Also don't fall into the trap of buying a new cab and thinking it can sound just like your old cab. It won't, but there are a lot of cabs out there that will sound different and better.

I own a nice SWR Goliath Jr. cabinet that I will never part with. The problem is that, at almost 59 years old, I can sort of lug it around but it's hard to lift it up to pack it into my car or anywhere else. So I went out and bought this cabinet, which is 44 lbs and a bit more luggable:

TC Electronic K-210 2 x 10" Bass Cabinet with 1" HF Driver

The problem is, of course, it's not the SWR and doesn't sound nearly as good, and so the outcome is that after gigging with it for a while I'm back to lugging the SWR around and begging for help with it. Band mates don't seem to mind, but I do. I have a little Fender Rumble Combo for small rooms, which is great, but for larger rooms, I need something. Currently running a GK 400RB into it but I'll likely be replacing that with more power at some point.

Any thoughts on a better sounding cabinet that is in that same weight range (45 lbs or less)?

Thanks!
Check out the Revsound rs212. Light and quite powerful.

Whatever. If you think so that's fine. I had it connected with a Genz Shuttle 3.0 in a practice setting and also had a dual 10" cab with it. We don't get that loud at rehearsal.

Once I changed out the cheap Eminence driver, and replaced it with a real speaker, that cab worked great. Just my opinion (but also members in the band agreed with the improvement in sound)

And like I say, it was sold and is is gigging routinely with a friend of mine connected to his two ten Markbass combo. Or with another dual 10 cab and a Genz Shuttle 6.0.

Phil Jones til the day I die .... incredible sound, no more ER visits for shots in my back. If you need the Big Speaker stage-look, you're out of luck with these. But if you want the most sound out of the lightest weight, two C4 cabinets are the way to go. A lot of times, you don't even need two.

First of all, it is not a cheap driver, these eminence speakers you are referring to are custom built aguilar speakers by eminence and bear the model name Aguilar JDK12. They share a similar design to Eminence Deltas, which are by all means already amongst the top speakers in the industry on their own.

You should also be aware, that mixing different speaker sizes usually results in phasing and thus results in a worse sound image than what you would expect from these cabs. My bet is, that the Beyma you put in there merely clashed with the 2x10 less and resulted in a better sound image as opposed to the original JDK in there.

You haven't specified what 2x10 cab you were running at that point so I am unable to comment further.

P.S.: Another bet is, that you were running the 2x10 on top of the 112GS which is another common mistake anyways, because if that 2x10 was anything of the word "quality" it made short work of a single 12 volume wise.

I recently purchased a Trace Elliot ELF 2x8 Cab (uses fatial drivers) - super easy to transport, light weight and outperforms many a 2x10 I have used in the past. 2 of them would slam.

I believe @tombowlus enjoyed pairing 2 of them with the Quilter BB800

Absolutely. The BB800 works great with the two Trace 2x8's either as a head, or as an amp (I've used the Trace Elliot Transit-B into the power amp input on the BB800 with great results).

I will also say that the GK Neo112-II and Neo212-II are amazing cabs, especially considering the price point, and it is very hard to go wrong with Bergantino, AudioKinesis, Baer, Michael Arnopol Soundworks, Mesa Subway cabs, and several others.
