Line 6 HX Effects

I am able to power my HX from my Truetone CS7 9v 500ma out with 2 of the plugs provided. The red and green one. Really made my day when I found that. And it worked.

Have you noticed any additional noise powering it that way? I've seen mention that powering it with other supplies works but also raises the noise floor a bit. Mine has been super quiet, so I can't imagine it being real different.

I had my reservations and fears as well. But they ended up being unfounded. No extra noise whatsoever. I kinda still can’t believe it it but it’s true.

I'll be finding out soon enough as well. My current house cleaning pedal sale :ninja: isn't going quite as quick as I'd like, but I've made enough so far to just cover everything I need for my HX board build. New board and cable kit yesterday, Strymon Zuma with mounting brackets and the two adapters (Voodoo current doubler and 2.1mm > 2.5mm adapter) today.

Just for kicks, I also added a sheet of plexi and some double sided tape to try my hand at making my own screen protectors for the HX. Will report back of course.

Not gonna lie... Pretty excited. Been planning a new board build since September(ish). :bassist:

So after spending some time with the hxfx I can unequivocally say that this unit is the bees knees. I sold off several pedals to pay for the hxfx and while it may have been smarter to keep them to compare the tones I really don’t feel that that would have been necessary. The sounds aren’t just “good enough” they’re really great. I was mainly getting it to cover my modulation needs and it’s more than covered that. The deluxe phase is truly deluxe (so many options, even odd numbered phaser stages) and the gray flanger nails the mxr flanger tone and is honestly easier to use than the real thing. The obsidian model is also insanely close (to my ears anyway) to the b3k I had. It’s definitely got that vibe.

The ease of use is also great, I was experimenting with sounds and make great stuff and I didn’t have to sit there with the manual. I’ve always been a pedal nerd so multi-f units were always very uncool to me. The hxfx is the first time where I don’t feel like I’m compromising on anything. Multi-fx are cool now

Update - got a new HX FX. Store replaced mine as one of the LCD's was faulty. Line 6 got back to me after a few days and have asked me to send through the video I took when it was happening, so hopefully it helps others in the future.

2.54 installed, off to play a bit more.

Also - currently trying to work out whether to switch my Cioks Ciokolate for a Zuma or CS12. Thoughts guys?

If you go through the presets one by one highlight them and click export it will identify the bad preset. If you upgraded your firmware from 2.40 to 2.50 when you first got it and didn’t factory reset after the upgrade then most likely all the factory presets are corrupted. The factory reset will erase any user made presets but you can individually export those so you can reload the after the reset.

I had the same issue when I first backed up @Diegombass. I had to do what @254 stringer outlined above. But it worked. And I found out it was the factory presets that were corrupted.

@fivestringgecko just got a zuma and I gotta say, although rather expensive, it sure looks like the end all be all in power. That thing has more than enough juice for the regular sized board even with the power hungry ones. If you’re on a budget I’d go the way of the CS12. That thing is a beast too. I don’t think you can go wrong either way you go. I don’t have a lot of exp with the Cioks but I hear they are really nice. The CS12 will power your HX though. What else are you running again??

I’ve had some weird things happen with my HX lately. Like yesterday I was changing my effects loop 2 between a send/return and fx loop 2 to switch it up and it was acting goofy like after I did that swap the effect would stay on even though the led was off. It’s like the switch action flip flopped. The last couple weeks I’ve had weird things like that happen. Maybe I just need to update to the new bug fix one. Or would the power supply cause that you think guys?

Possibly - this is why I was a little worried about believing the marketing about the 1Spot stuff. It's all well and good for the unit to have enough power supplied to turn on, but if you're in the middle of doing some fairly heavy DSP processing, surely that would need more power? There'd be a reason why Line 6 would supply a 3 Amp power supply, right?

The list keeps changing - Cali76 CB, Vintage Microtubes, AO, DSM OmniCabSim and probably a COG Effects T-47 as well as the HX. Plus a Polytune Mini and a Morningstar ML-5 switcher. So not an insignificant amount of gear I guess.

Yeah I’m gonna go back to the line 6 power supply for a bit. See if it keeps happening. I know power can do weird things when powered by things that aren’t “company approved” or promoted. Makes sense. I’m not saying the CS7 is the reason this is happening. But these were the things I was concerned about in powering it with something else.

I think any 3 of those would work great for what you’re running. You’re not running a ton for the power supplies named. Just depends on how much you want to spend at that point.

Gig night. Before the gig I checked the HX and it crashed with boot error. The second time I turned it on it was fine. Still on FW 2.50 though. During the whole night I kept it on for fear of another crash (we were the last of 3 bands to play tonight, but during the gig it performed flawlessly.
I'm not surprised about the boot error either, today was a BAD day. We smashed a Marshall 4x12 and possibly a tube head as well. Also the other guitar combo broke during the last song. I guess it's just one of those days...

Jeez, would like to see your band's live show. Was any fire involved?

In theory, could I take a Strymon Ojai, or any isolated power supply, and use a one spot in reverse to sum the current? I have an HX on a board with a filter and I would love to power everything together. My intuition tells me it should work, as taking two wall warts really gets my OCD going.

I don't think it's as easy as summing the current, I don't think that the 1-spot cables are built that way. I played it safe when I ordered my Zuma and also ordered the Voodoo current doubler (as opposed to the voltage doubler). It's specifically wired to double the current but not the voltage.

I know it has to do with parallel vs series wiring. As far as I know, the current doubler is a daisy chain in reverse, but I could be wrong.
