Line 6 HX One

It bugs me the MIDI doesn't have a command for preset scrolling (i.e. previous and next). All I see are jumping to specific presets. Seems like a weird miss.

Looking at the owners manual, looks like you can use the foot switches to scroll the presets. I plan to just put the effects I’m going to use as presets 1 to whatever to make it easy to scroll to them during a gig. I don’t think I’m going to need to switch presets during any one song.

Anyone heard when these will ship? All I’m getting is last week of November, maybe.

Yup, which means the programming exists in the firmware. All the more odd they didn't assign it to a CC command, and even when out of their way to put in the Doc that it doesn't respond to Bank commands; it's such a common/normal function of (anything with multiple presets).

Friends - I am trying to decide between the HF One and the HX Effects. I know those are radically different things, but in the former case I would only be replacing a small section of my pedal board; in the latter case would be replacing the entire pedalboard. But my question is this - I noticed that in the current HX Effects manual, Noble isn't listed, but in the current HX One manual it is. Is this just a case of the HX One manual being more recent? I am assuming each of these units uses the same firmware and presets - is that true? In other words, if I got an HX Effects and updated the firmware, would Noble be there? Thanks!!

They share the exact same effects list, as we update all Helix and HX products at the same time. We don't update manuals until full revs (2.0, 3.0, etc.) so the model lists are often out of date.

Yes, it will be in there with the update. They must have just updated the HX One manual as I didn't see the Regal in there the other day. I got my HX One the other day and performed the update and the Regal and the 4 other new effects appeared.

Ordered one today, this will fit my one-effect-at-a-time occasional need. I had an HX Stomp so already familiar with how it all functions. Here is the OE Compact Bass Rig pedalboard design it will fit into, Nano+ sized.

Advice.... based on my pedals on the above post, what order should the HX One be in? I will most likely use the HX One for chorus, octave, and auto-swell. Maybe others as I learn.

Depending on which effects you use on the HX One, I would put the DCX in the insert loop. Maybe the Cali too. Then you can decide whether you want the effect to be pre or post loop. I use pitch effects and some modulations pre loop, while delays are post loop.

I use a similar setup on a Pedaltrain Nano and put my compressor after the HX Stomp to smooth out any volume spikes from individual effects.

HX One Report:

IMG_0752.jpeg

Spent the last couple of days getting oriented to the HX One and getting it placed on my pedal board.

Verdict (Interim): I used to own an HX Stomp and I thought it was overkill for bass, only used one amp, no cabs (not impressed), no comps (no metering), and a few effects. In contrast, I think the HX One is a very good bass player's utility tool and a good value proposition. It can replace a handful of pedals, comfortably fits on a pedal board, easy to power, the Library software is limited but does allow easy naming/arrangement. If you have your amp/cab/DI handled with other gear, the HX One fills a niche nicely. It has some control features I would change (and hope they update) but they are at a nuisance level for me, not a deal-breaker.

Tuner: You have to have the bypass mode for the HX One set to DSP in order for the tuner to function. Set to True Bypass, the tuner is not available. I tested the tuner against my Peterson strobe and the HX flickered me in-tune at 2 cents flat/sharp. That may be good enough, even though I would prefer to set the HX to True Bypass, but it will eliminate a pedal.

Power: I'm using a CIOKS Sol power supply and the HX One plugged right up. Way better than the HX Stomp.

Preset Global Setting: The HX One has a global setting to bound the presets that get scrolled. So, I have it set to only scroll 000-009, keeping all the factory presets out of the way when playing. Nice touch.

Footswitch: I got an Ampero footswitch that should allow simpler preset scrolling. Unfortunately, the feature to pre-load a preset rather than make it live instantly, does not work when scrolling with the footswitch.

Presets: I landed on 9 presets to get me started. I play at several local churches so these selections reflect the contemporary worship styles.

000: Flat Noble DI set as a clean boost to push the Bassrig Super Vintage into overdrive. I tired the Ampeg Scrambler and the B7K models for this purpose, but clean boosted Noble was the best.

001: Chorus Boss CE-1. Compared to the Ampeg Liquifer Bass Chorus and the Line 6 Chorus. The Boss was the simplest to operate and sounds good.

002: Auto-Volume Echo. For church applications, swelling in some supporting whole tones is really nice. Kept the echo portion of this to the minimum.

003: Plate Reverb. Many like the Dynamic Hall, but I like the Plate from my previous recording days back-when. I use reverb for headphone practice, but not live up in a PA.

004: Boctaver. I really want to make this work for big choruses. Not sure I am getting it dialed in just right.

005: Synth String. Another lower octave effect that sounds cool. Kept it to the minimalist settings.

006: Noble DI w/EQ: I tried to dial in the Noble to sound like my DCX Bass. The Noble just doesn't get there with the analog overtones and deliciousness of the Origin Effects gear. But I got it close to my DCX Direct Console tone in case I need to use the DCX for another purpose. I also tried the Low/High Shelf preset but the Noble sounded better.

007: HPF. Used the Low/High Cut preset to create a Broughton high pass filter.

008: Poly Capo. To transpose keys if needed.

009: Retro Reel. Everybody seems to use it. I need to work with it.
