Line 6 Relay G10, short review

Got a G10 for Christmas - plugged it in. Sounds great but I'm getting the dreaded "high frequency pitch" over my tone! The exact same sound as experienced by Jayme Lewis on one of his active basses in his review

Anybody else experienced this issue? I read that it is the way my jack is wired and that I need to reverse it.

Just guessing here...

Normally, the battery negative terminal for an on-board preamp is connected to ground via the sleeve of a 1/4" mono plug of an instrument cable. The stereo jack in the bass is normally wired ground to the sleeve terminal and battery negative to the ring terminal. In most applications, there's no functional difference wiring it this way, versus backwards. Either way, when you plug in the mono cable, ground and battery negative are connected together. For the G10, apparently, it matters because the ring of its stereo plug has a function--charging the internal battery.

Internal to the G10 transmitter, there's probably a circuit that isolates the battery charging circuit and shorts the ring and sleeve so the on-board preamp can operate. Wire it backwards, and it misbehaves. If you swap the leads on the ring and sleeve terminals, I'm guessing the G10 will operate properly.

I ordered one from sweetwater and got that with both of my new basses. So sweetwater sent another and it done the very same thing. I had to send it back because of it. That is a bad issue IMO because alot of people have experienced that with active basses. I would have loved to keep it if not for that because the sound was good without the squeal.

After some research on Line 6's community pages I figured out that the issue is the G10 uses a TRS (dual ring) jack instead of a standard TS. I bought this to go between the bass and transmitter and it solved the issue.

Just an FYI for everyone: We started including a right angle, mono ¼" adapter in with G10 and G10T units in October. Whether or not your retailer has them in their stock, I cannot guarantee, depending on the age of their stock. Most of the major retailers should have units with the included adapter by now. The packaging will show under "PACKAGE CONTENTS:" if the adapter is included. The adapter should mitigate any active circuitry wiring issue you have with your bass. You could also use a straight mono adapter if you prefer that orientation.

It was weird. I had the noise issue so I got the right angle adapter which solved the problem. The other day I opened up my electronics in my bass to clean the pots with contact cleaner. I discovered that my input jack was twisted a bit from tightening the nut and I didn't realize it. After untwisting it the noise issue went away completely without the adapter?? I mean, I'm really happy about that but I still don't know what I did to correct it other than straighten out some twisted wires.

All I can come up with is that the signal path is so pure with the G10 that it picks up any potential problem and magnifies it.
 
Anyone know how many channels the G10 has? I have loved mine and have been a pretty good salesman...our soundguy bought one for his band, and our singer bought one for his acoustic. Also, lead guitar picked up a G30. Last night at the gig I noticed a few pops now and then. Could have been the IEM's (lots of wireless traffic flying around for a 7 piece band), but I didn't notice that before another G10 was entered into the mix. Just wondering since the manual states that the G10 auto switches channels.

Good question. My whole band may eventually have them so I wonder about this too. So far only 2 of us have G10s

Perhaps some of your wires were shorting together, or a voltage leak, or perhaps just EMI from the unshielded wires being in close proximity. Glad it's working for you, in any case.

Good question. My whole band may eventually have them so I wonder about this too. So far only 2 of us have G10s

Thank you-where did you find this out? 4 channels is less than my old x2 XDS-95 (had 5 channels).

When the transmitter is docked in the receiver, the G10 will select the best RF channel from 14 possible channels.

Yes, but you gotta be careful:
  1. Connect Tx #1 to Rx #1—which chooses an optimal channel and syncs them—and then plug into guitar #1
  2. Connect Tx #2 to Rx #2—which chooses the second most optimal channel and syncs them—and then plug into guitar #2
If you don't do everything in the right order, there's a chance that the channels will swap—or worse, not work at all! If you're in the heat of a gig and you and another guitarist are swapping Txes in and out of Rxes, yes, there's a chance for bad things to happen. Luckily, the Tx's battery will last longer than the longest gig, so you shouldn't have to dock it until after the last encore.

Keep in mind that G10 was never meant to be a touring solution. It's most comfortable in living rooms, home studios, and practice spaces. The top goals were ease-of-use and sound quality (and affordability!), not multichannel flexibility. G70's considerably more expensive, but it lets you connect up to 16 guitars/Txes to the same Rx and cycle instantly between them with a footswitch (and even route them to specific sets of outputs at specific levels with specific cable tone settings and specific LED colors).
