List your 1st 3 amps.

There is a post on the "Bass Guitar" page asking us to list our 1st 3 basses, I thought list our 1st 3 amps might be fun.

'72 Univox 112 open backed 50 watt guitar combo, bought brand new.

Ampeg B-15N head w/DIY Radio Shack driver loaded cab. The Univox was better, seriously. The B-15 got munched by generator power pretty early on anyway.

Marantz integrated hi-fi amp, only one 125 watt channel operative. I modded one input or another for bass, probably the phono one. Sounded really good, when it worked. Can't remember what cab I used with it, but I did a lot of rehearsals and a few dozen gigs with it, I think.

1) Yamaha 5watt - Pretty sure it was made of balsa wood with an am radio speaker.
2) Peavey TNT 150 - I'm certain the "150" referred to the weight.
3) Peavey Mark VI and 410TX - The cabinet far out-classed the head.
* Bonus-traded the Mark VI in on a Peavey 4C poweramp and Max preamp - wish I still had it.

From 88-94ish:
-Holden 100 tube head into Fane loaded sugar-scoop bin. The head exploded and went on fire. The bin was massive and heavy for a 12 year old.
-Carlsbro Cobra 90 combo with 15” speaker. It looked a bit TE but wasn’t anywhere near that fancy. I could lift it, though.
-ADA Bass preamp/Fender power amp/ADA 210. The 210 fell into an orchestral pit accidentally and the magnets buckled. The dealer had started doing SWR and got me into those at landed cost instead.
....etc, etc.

1, Rogue 50 watt tube amp out of the Eaton's catalog here in Canada. One 15" speaker. A guitarist bought it from me.
2. Ampeg B15S portaflex. 60 watts of tubey goodness. Replaced the speaker with an Altec around 1974. Used it for a very long time.
3. Gallien-Krueger 400RB. I still have it and use it occasionally. It's had many different speakers as mates.

20W Univox amp 1 spkr piggy back
Kustom 150? And Marshall head. Not sure of cabs but I think the Marshall went to 1 15” Gauss and Kustom went to 4 x 12 padded cab (forgot name but it was a button tufted cab, Earth something or other)
What as next? Can’t remember...

Home-made 100 (ish) watt head with a Plush tuck n roll 2x15.
Peavey head (might have been called a Century, 100 watts, only 6 knobs) into a 15" Thiele cab with a K140.
Yamaha 100 watt head that weighed in at about 60lbs. of chipboard with 3 lbs of components, with a Yamaha horn ported 2x15 that musta weighed 100 lbs. Everything this amp lacked in tone and power it made up in sheer size and weight.

1) Peavey 115S combo with the Sheffield Speaker (bought used)
2) GK800RB + Yorkville 410B (both bought used)
3) Trace Elliott GP12SMX Preamp, Yorkville AP800 Poweramp, Yorkville 410B cabinet (all bought used)
4) Eden Navigator WP100 The Navigator Preamp + QSC PLX 2402 (bought brand new) + Eden D-210XLT, D-115XLT, D-410XLT, and D-410XST

Crazy progression huh?

Circa 1969... A Standel combo. Not memorable.
1973? Fender Bassman 50. Nice tone but not enough juice.
1978 Road 220B head with 2 Altec 15" speakers from the early 70s (DYI). One of the cabinets was quite large and used a folded horn design. It was exceptionally loud! The other (smaller but heavy) cab was built by a local guy. I'm still using it at a practice space with the SWR amp. I still have the head but it crackles and apparently needs work (anyone want it?)

Currently have an MB500 and SWR SM400

Well, the very first thing I played through was a stereo receiver in around 1986/87. ...but if we don't count that, my first instrument amps were guitar amps.

  1. KMD GS-45 (guitar and around 1989)
  2. Ampeg VH-140C (Guitar but would also use it with amp #3 for the top end of a bi-amp rig and this was around 1992)
  3. Peavey Markbass VIII (Bass but would also use it with amp #2 for the bottom end of a bi-amp rig.)

If we are talking bass amps only...

...and I listed all the ones that stayed with me longer than a few months for fun.

  1. Peavey Markbass VIII/Peavey 1820 cab (very first bass rig around 92/93)
  2. Demeter VTBP-201dbl (pre)/QSC (power)/Mitchell 1x15 (1997-ish)
  3. SWR Bass 350 Chrome (head)/SWR Henry 8x8 (1998-ish)
  4. Line6 Bass Pod Pro (pre)/Crown (power)/Henry 8x8 (2000-ish)
  5. SWR Interstellar Overdrive (pre)/SWR Power 750 (power)/SWR Bigfoot 2x12 (2002-ish)
  6. Gallien-Krueger 400rb-ii/GK RB410 (2005-ish/sold in 2010)
  7. SWR Bass 350 Red (head)/whatever cab was at the venue (2015)
  8. Darkglass X7 (direct to PA or console) ...and this is my current situation.
