I had a DJ lecture me about sound systems at a live show one time. My system was heavy, cumbersome, and analog. His was light, easy breezy, and digital. He was explaining the difference as if lecturing a small child. Never mind that he knew jack about EQ, and his noise was ear-splitting and tinnitus inducing.

Not a reflection of DJs; the thread just reminded me of that time, that's all.

This is not reality. There's more young bands and musicians now then there ever was when I was young.

There may be more young musicians than there were a few years ago, but there are a lot less paying gigs than there used to be. Weddings, parties, and bar owners seem to be willing to pay a DJ $200 a lot more often than to pay a 4 piece band $75 or $100 a person to play the gig.

Stereotype much? Huge numbers of teens and millenials are flocking to Firefly, Burning Man, Lollapalooza, SXSW and numerous other festivals to hear hundreds of live rock bands, many of whom are unknown in the mainstream. Sure, those festivals feature EDM too, but the live music scene is alive and well. Bands like the Killers and Foo Fighters have arena tours that consistently sell out. Don't let MTV and award shows fool you. Rock is dead they say? Long live rock!

Didn't say rock was dead. My point is that DJs are doing most of the paying gigs (weddings, parties, bars, etc.) that bands used to do. Oh, BTW, Foo Fighters are a bunch of "old guys." They've been around for more than 20 years. By the way, I played bass on a show last summer with a punk band, some original stuff, some covers (Dead Kennedys, Black Flag,etc.), so I don't think I'm a complete dinosaur. Also, I average 12 to 20 paying gigs a year, as well as 30 to 50 free gigs, fairs, etc.. Jazz trios, new country cover bands, classic (dinosaur) rock, etc.. But there are ZERO six night a week, pay your rent, buy a new car, pay your child support type gigs any more. Not in my little 50,000 population town, or the Indianapolis metro area (over 1,000,000 population). Reality.
