Live stream rehearsal

Idea: record practice, record breaks and discussions, maybe put some announcements in there, quickly slap together a "best of" of the practice sessions and some of the breaks and stuff, make announcements, whatever else. Otherwise, just plain livestreaming practice can't necessarily be all that productive.

Edit: I have been very, very wrong in the past though, and could currently be wrong.

So my co bandleader

Oh,oh . There should be only one bandleader. I made the mistake once sharing the bandleader chair. This band no longer exist. Unless you divide the responsibility. Like bussiness leader and musical leader. But even in that case..

On topic. Rehearsal space is a sacred space for me. Everybody should feel comfortable. Being themselfs, making mistakes, feeling free to speak. A place of trust to develop and grow as a team. Showtime must be in front of the curtain not behind it. IMO.

My guitar-playing friend (shown below) wanted to do a live stream rehearsal, but I said "no way...I'm not getting my gear wet!"

Well, I wouldn't probably choose to do it again, but it's worked well for us for 3 years. He handles booking and marketing, I handle musical direction, technical stuff and expenditure. We usually see eye to eye, but our differences of opinion have generally been a strength for us, as our compromises have moved us in a good direction.

If you want to livestream a few tunes that you've actually played in front of audiences, sure thing. Otherwise: Never, never, never. We serve up the delicious sausage; we don't show how it is made. We may someday get a pro video of a live club performance; we want even the stay-at-homes to get a taste of what they're missing.
Secret Sausage. Love it. May have to change our name.

So my co bandleader (frontman) and I are having a rare disagreement, because he wants to live stream all of our rehearsals on social media in their entirety in the name of publicity. I'm cool with a couple songs, and the few songs we have streamed for rehearsal have gotten a ton of positive feedback. Way more people watch the stream than show up for gigs. But I feel that it is counterproductive to actually working on the small details such as what rehearsals are for, and he feels like it is better practice for actual performances. Please weigh in.

He’s of the opinion that you should be giving free private concerts, that are 2-3 hours long, to the entire world: how exactly does that actually help you guys?

I don't think it does, but he thinks it's good publicity.

"Good publicity" means what exactly in the real world in this case?

Why would anyone bother coming to your gigs at all if they can watch you perform for three times as long, from their own homes, for free?

you're giving away your shows every week and wondering why gig attendance is lower ?

I think the live-rehearsal-to-the-world will stop being a good idea as soon as someone has a 'hot-mike moment' and says something you'd rather not have shared with the world...

I'm all for teasing new material once it's gig-ready, but weekly raw live rehearsal sounds like a bad idea on a continuing basis.

Right now we have only done a couple of songs a couple of times. My business partner wants to change this to streaming full rehearsals as a matter of course.

Well, that's a spectacularly bad idea in so many ways I can't even count them.

You know, just because you have a computer and a fast internet connection doesn't mean you have to use them constantly.

Not just no, but he!! no freaking way no!

Does this doofus spend all of rehearsal fiddly-dicking around on his phone, too?

Hard nope for me. I want to drink beer, talk trash about the other bands we play with and the venues we infest, and screw around with arrangements, tempos, and pedals. I can see the benefit of a 3-5 song mini set before/between gigs to keep people engaged, but not the WHOLE rehearsal. Ours run 2-3 hours, and we play for about 1/2- 3/4 of that, the rest is just (very pleasant) BSing :)

I'm of the old school mentality so I believe in working in a semi somewhat private rehearsal setting to produce a decent product to display rather than show the bumps and bruises to get there on social media. Like I said, I maybe bias and there could be a new way of doing things these days but I do look back sometimes and laugh at how terrible we were at some of the first rehearsals we did on a VHS camcorder-gawd awful...I won't show those to nobody except close friends for humor. I agree with you to show the good ones you got down tight.
He's an idiot. Who would sit and listen to an entire rehearsal???? I think he thinks waaaaay to much of himself.
