Live stream rehearsal

So my co bandleader (frontman) and I are having a rare disagreement, because he wants to live stream all of our rehearsals on social media in their entirety in the name of publicity. I'm cool with a couple songs, and the few songs we have streamed for rehearsal have gotten a ton of positive feedback. Way more people watch the stream than show up for gigs. But I feel that it is counterproductive to actually working on the small details such as what rehearsals are for, and he feels like it is better practice for actual performances. Please weigh in.
Just meet in the middle somewhere. Streaming the entire rehearsal is kind of silly, I agree it would be counter productive as far as actually fixing problems with songs. But it can be decent promotion to have a peak at rehearsals. Film a full song or two with maybe a few words at the begginning to plug your next gig. But I don’t think most people want to see all the downtime and talking at rehearsals. I don’t anyways. Only thing we really do from rehearsal is teasers like this

That sounds like a terrible idea, in both a business and musical sense. Not even a conversation I'd want to have.

If done at all I definitely agree nephilym's teaser promo video would be good idea, but to actually have your rehearsals broadcast would be detrimental, especially to the productivity of rehearsal. Despite what people might say they really don't want to see how the sausage is made.

I wouldn’t unless they were heavily edited for the same reason auto manufacturers don’t put their test trials on social media. It’s bad for business.

Practice is practice,no one allowed but the band.a gig is a gig come and enjoy

I do think it's a good idea to post some songs from practice. For me, I get bored pretty quickly and wouldn't be able to watch the full rehearsal and I'm older. The new generation isn't able to watch the practice due to lack of attention span. Show your best stuff!!

If you have the storage ability on a server to host a several hundred gigabyte video/audio file and have the technical know how of editing the video, I say do it. But breaking down the video and showing only your best stuff will help you more verses the full practice. Show you audience your best to get gigs and expand you listening base. Just my 2 cents.

it's a live stream - no storage involved unless they want to archive every video, but they'd be using plenty of bandwidth. besides, if you don't need high quality 4K or full HD videos, they don't need to be THAT big.

Why would anyone bother coming to your gigs at all if they can watch you perform for three times as long, from their own homes, for free?

watching a band on a 26 inch monitor turned down at 1am isn't really the same as seeing them live.

you can't heavily edit a live stream - it's live.

Does this imaginary scenario somehow exist before the advent of headphones? ;)

Live streaming entire rehearsals still has zero upside, but live streaming a song or two and interacting with fans can be very helpful.

i know people who don't use headphones but watch music all day long.

that's what i think - there's no upside to streaming an entire rehearsal at all.

The salient point is not about the capability of modern technology, it’s about marketing, which is the reason why this topic was brought up. Does it make good business sense? IMO, no.

Over 400 people watched ours from last night. Our gig attendance is like 50 to 100 people.

Interesting point, maybe a streamed performance, as opposed to a rehearsal would be a better idea. Case in point, if they weren’t the “Beatles” would everybody have flocked (if you can call that flocked) to the theaters to see Let it Be with them working stuff out?

I watched it first run as a working musician, and a big Beatles fan and found it increadible boring. Can’t imaging what people with no knowledge of the creative process or music would have got out of it.

Some of the stuff that gets said at our rehearsals would probably end in a lynch mob at out next gig. Rehearsals are 25% music, 75% talking bulls….No way would we bother to stream an entire rehearsal. I’m only there because I have to be, why would anyone else want to watch it?

I would do it at the end of a rehearsal “….hey everyone we’ve been working on some new tunes, you can come check them out at {next gig} but here is a quick taste”

Not sure if you can test run a live stream, but there’s a good chance it will sound like rubbish, depending on your set-up.

i market on the internet for a living. i can't see why entire streaming rehearsals would make good business sense, either.

the rehearsals i go to are 80% or better playing and sorting songs out - timing, breaks, leads - then playing them till we nail it. i like this idea:

"I would do it at the end of a rehearsal “….hey everyone we’ve been working on some new tunes, you can come check them out at {next gig} but here is a quick taste”."

If it kept the band wives home... sure. lol
Honestly I would never live feed rehearsal in it's entirety. You need to feel 100% comfortable to make mistakes in rehearsal and talk sh#t about other bands in town. Seriously an awful idea except to build your social media presence... I agree you rehearse for a set amount of time and live stream a few tunes might make sense.

Go ahead and call the livestreams "rehearsals" but to the band members, they should be shows. Run through the set, one song after another, then end the stream.
Keep "real" rehearsals private.
