I like lobster. Apart from an occasional pasta/bisque/fisherman's stew type of deal, the only way I ever ate it was to crack it open, pour in some drawn butter etc.

My wife introduced me to the lobster roll, which around here is basically a 'regular' lobster on a long roll, hot with butter. I guess it has the advantage of being portable, but I still prefer to leave the bread aside.

Then there is that 'other' lobster roll, which is cold lobster mixed with mayo, again on a long roll. I guess it's a decent way to use leftover lobster, although I seldom have that problem, and when I do prefer to solve it with the aforementioned pasta, bisque etc.

anyway, people like to eat different things, so I figured I'd get the pulse of talkbass on the lobster roll issue.

Also feel free to discuss any controversial or mundane food issues here!

...Too much work for too little reward.
That's how I feel about crabs. I live in Maryland, where crabs are supposed to be a big deal, but whenever I order them I feel like I burn more calories cracking them open and digging out the tiny bit of meat, than I get from eating them. It's a net loss. I'm hungrier after the meal than before.

Yup. The meat is definitely delicious but it's too much work. Alaskan king crab legs are great. Lots of easily accessible meat. Costco use to sell good ones for a great price back in the day. They'd set up the stand and hundreds of pounds of the stuff would sell out in an hour.

The first few times I ate steamed crabs, I wound up exhausted, hungry and grossed out. Later, I was briefly married to a woman from Baltimore who showed me how to break one down like a pro. One of the only good aspects of that time in my life!

I am from Maine, I have had my share of lobster although I feel it's overpriced in lobster land it's usually mixed with mayo. Honestly hot with butter sounds better to me. I always thought crab, shrimp and other seafood was better but it is still good.

Growing up in Maine it's boring but right off the boat during winter on the side of the road fisherman would sell shrimp a dollar a pound. Talk about a great cheap meal and they are pretty simple and fast to de shell. Advice to anyone visiting never buy lobster from a restaraunt especially not McDonalds I can't trust someone who gets it from McDonald's I can understand if you're land locked but damn their beef is shady enough. If you want a good price and best quality always hit the docks or look for a truck with a salty old fisherman who clearly just got off the boat. His or her truck should be wet smell like sea and they usually are still in waders because they drove straight to their spot from the dock.

how long have you been in CT? evidently the hot lobster roll is a CT specialty.

this thread started because we saw a commercial for the McDonald's lobster roll and it got us talking. I'm not sure I would trust it either. They have one at Panera right now too, it was $17.99 for the half sandwich! I've also noticed that the grocery store lobster tank has been all but empty over the last 2 weeks (my kids like to say hi.) It could be a coincidence, but I wonder. We usually only get it at the shore anyway.

That is how I feel about my food. If I go to a nice restaurant and I am spending a lot of money, I want my meal easy to access. I don't want to work peeling it away from a shell. Just sayin.
Exactly. And for what? A couple of bites of tail meat, claws, little bits in the legs. You leave the restaurant hungry if that's all you're having. The tamale is good though.

I sorely miss blue crab sandwiches. . . just bread n deep fry the suckers and right onto a roll of your choice. Easiest crab to catch/clean/eat and yummy too.

I have been living in a CT for five years and was not aware that the hot lobster roll was a CT thing. Then again I don't touch the lobster here either. The only time I eat it is when I visit family and they're paying. CT is interesting I had no idea about it I kind of landed here. Apparently it's the birth place of the burger. Best pizza and I will vouch and stand by it. Also I guess steamed burgers are big here never tried them myself.

As far as the grocery store lobster summer is the best time for lobster when the soft shells are in they have a better flavor. I imagine McDonalds has their lobster frozen and flown in. I don't know for sure I don't work there just my guess.

you are right about Pizza, we have the best of NY and New England (Greek) style as well as our own native style. (New Haven)

In Southern CT you can get a good sicilian slice too, but up here the only place I've found Sicilian is in a little deli way out in the sticks (they also sell live bait and night crawlers.)

I suspect most of the grocery lobsters are from Maine in the first place. We do have lobstermen here, one of my buddies was the master baiter on his cousin's boat in the summers while in college. How good the lobsters are is another matter.

And not to worry about the hot lobster roll, I lived in CT 30 years before i heard of one.

Maryland crabs are special because of the old bay seasoning while boiling, right? King crab legs never come that way. Eating them is more of a special event that you have to enjoy the process of. I do miss them.

Nothing beats soft shell as far as crab goes.
I'm going to have to find some of these soon. They are quite deelish.

Ok good glad you showed me the ropes. I do know there is fishing in New Haven especially. D'Amatos or D'Antes forget the name it's a seafood joint my wife is from NH she says it's amazing best fried white fish. I was driving back home a few years ago and snow was hitting hard so I told my wife I want to try the food and since it's snowing no one will be there. I was wrong an hour wait and people where still lining up. I haven't tried it still.

But you're right what makes CT what it is, is the hybrid of New England and NY unfortunately it has NYs prices influenced.

Where's your favorite pizza spot I vote Pizza House on Howard Ave?

And to pull it back on topic where's some good seafood joints?

When I used to work in a mall here in New England I tried a lobster sub from a local sandwich shop chain. It was one of those "Welcome to D'Angelo, would you like to try our new lobster sub?" Sure! "Would you like that as a meal with chips and a drink?" Sure! $19.89 later... Needless to say I was shocked at the price. The sammich was meh, prolly because I was in sticker shock when I was eating it.

Yes, McDonald's lobster roll sounds interesting, but not enough for me to buy one.
