Dang, if I ever get the chance one day I would like to ask him 2 questions ...why do you no longer build neck through basses , or use multi laminate necks anymore?

Mike will still build neck-throughs to order (there are a few NT MTDs out there). He told me he actually prefers the sound of the bolt-ons.

I bet it had to do with his non- compete clause in his contract after he sold Tobias to Gibson. A single piece, bolt-on neck would not be confused with a Tobias bass. That said, I actually think I once saw a neck through 535, but I can say for certain I did.

I had a neckthru 534 and there are a few neckthru 535's out there too. Mike will build them as a custom option but he says he prefers the tone and feel of his bolt ons now. The one I had was built to look as close as Mike felt comfortable to the original Tobias basses.

This 635 is a beauty, especially the fingerboard. This caught my attention because I played this song in church today.

For what it’s worth, and as little play time we heard, I actually liked the sound of the one with stock pickups over the Bart pickups…

I really wish I had never sold my Tobias Killer B 5 string. It played very well with it's no gloss finished neck. It's played and sound very nice but I wanted something different and was out of work. It was a Transparent Red and the Bartolinis pickups and preamp were really nice. I hear these clips and mine was right there.

98 or 99% of us have an “I shouldn’t have let it go” story. 75% of us have several.

My 535-24 is the best bass I have ever owned. And I have owned a LOT of great high end basses over the years.

And Mike is a great genuine guy to talk to.

I have a 534 that Mike built for me about 4 years ago; which has some drastically different specs. Mike bent over backwards working with me. One of the best cats out there. Here is the result (shameless eye candy opp):

I'm really glad everyone enjoyed the shop visit video! More MTD content to come. The visit really left an impression on me as to the passion that the Tobias dudes have. Thank you all for the kind words! We're still getting the whole on location audio thing sorted, future videos will be better .
