Position markers on a fretboard are there for the audience to see. Unless you're hunched over, you won't (and therefore shouldn't) see them while you're playing. But on the side of the neck? Go for it:

Absolutely. I recently bought an Aerodyne Jazz Bass, with position markers on the side of the fretboard only. I was was worried that it might be a problem, but turns out it wasn’t.

Mine brings mice and shrews. Also likes to bring them to me half dead and bat them around in the air...good kitty!

Usually our cat delivers them to my wife, which freaks her out, but from time to time he'll bring one to me. Our other cat is old (19 or so) and not much interested in chasing mice. We live in a fairly rural area of Washington state about 5-miles out of town so we're actually glad he gets them.

My cat has caught a couple of mice, watches other cats (and the occasional raccoon) out the window and eats bugs. So far no instruments. He does however have good taste in pedals!
