Hi,

After years of SS and hybrid amps, I am ready to take the plunge into the ALLTUBE amps world.

So I am looking for an alltube amp with 200 watts max.
(I don't like the sound of the SVT, but really like the V4)

What can i find on the used market?

Ampeg V4
Trace Elliot ?
Koch

Pignose b100v is a 100 watt all tube amp, it's what I use, sounds great.
The Ampeg B15 fliptop reissue (there's one for sale in the classifieds) is also 100 watts I believe and supposedly sounds good.
The Mesa Boogie Buster series of combos sound good at 200 watts too, very heavy though.
Old Fender Bassman amps will fit the bill as well.

I am going with the Traynor YBA 200 soon. IMO I think its the best bang for the buck and despite the price the amp sounds great. I would even go so far as to say the Traynor sounds better the more expensive amps in the same wattage range. I would like to try the Peavey VB-2 just to compare the two. Although I will still go with the Traynor because I like single channel amps.

There have been some awesome amps mentioned already. I don't doubt that are a bunch I've never heard of. You can spend anywhere from $100 to several thousand on a tube amp <200 watts. Sometimes your best buys are the ones you just stumble on, and have never heard of. Some to look out for:

Peavey Alphabass (not the greatest distortion IMO but a good amp and often super cheap)

Sound City - any Sound City is going to be 200 watts or less. I like liked the sound of the L120 - a guitar head - with bass, and own an X188, a super rare 200 watt bass amp. SC amps are hand wired, and great for the people that can't afford a Hiwatt or Marshall.

Marshall Super Bass or Super Lead - my 100 watt Super Lead was a wicked bass amp, though probably too much distortion at high volumes for some people.

I don't think anyone's mentioned the Sadowsky tube amp - never heard one, but they're supposed to be fantastic if you can afford one.

How low a volume do want to hear breakup? 200 watts might be too much. My x188 breaks up nicely, but it's deadly loud. Same with the Mesa 400 I owned.
