looking for a envelope filter...

I am very keen on getting a envelope filter for those nice funky tunes but which one is the best for me.

I have a highway 1 jazz (passive) and uses a harkte A100 amp (if that helps).

I was keen on the EBS bassiq but i heard that it isn't that great for passive basses.

So please suggest any cool envelope filter that would sound awesome on my jazz bass.

thanks

DOD FX25B I've heard mention is awesome, but I haven't heard it... see if you can find through a search here on TB.... don't let the grumpy/crankyz bug you....

I've heard that the EBS is supposed to be very nice....?????

Have you tried a search? There are tons of threads on envelope filters. Also, check the Wiki - there is a whole page of sound clips of pedals here, so you can go through them and find the envelope filters, and then choose which one you like the sound of best.

Personally, I have a Digitech Bass Synth Wah, a Danelectro French Fries, an Electro Harmonix Micro Q-Tron, and an Ashdown Bass Envelope Filter.

There are loads of others though. Another very popular one is the DOD FX25.

I just bought a Maxon AF-9 and it is supposed to be incredible. I can't wait for it to come in (sometime late next week). I've owned a few EHX Q Trons (old ones) and I've owned an HAZ Labs Mutron III+ (which I liked very much...but it has a bad rap on TB). I've also owned an EHX Bassballs and I liked it very much as well...easy to make Quack!

Good luck in your search...envelopes can be very personal...listen to tons of clips and make your own conclusion. Also...I use only passive basses and I prefer them going into an Envelope Filter because sometimes Active is too much.

I think the BassIQ is set up more with active basses in mind - I've heard you have to crank it with low output basses. Quite the opposite of something like the Q-Tron where you can't turn the gain up beyond the first notch without overdriving it if you plug in a Warwick. :)

Yeah...I've never used the BassIQ. I know EBS stuff is nice...but I usually can't find a reason to spend so much money on 1 pedal that I can get relatively the same sound from another pedal.

I have owned an EBS Octabass...loved it but I quickly sold it because I just didn't have a reason for an octave pedal when I really needed an overdrive (at the time of course :smug:)

Well IMO this is an effect that depends on the players taste more than anything. Currently I have a DOD fx25 and a Digitech BSW on my board. The DOD is great for straight up envelope filter. The BSW is more versatile, currently I'm using it for "burp synth" tones. It's great as an octaver, and the sub-filter setting is pretty cool too.

I might add another to my board though...as effects are addictive.

I am happy with my AF-9. I had previously been using it in collaboration with a blender pedal in order to retain the low end fundamental while enjoying the higher pitched quacks on top. I recently found a pretty satisfying setting that I feel holds enough lows to bypass the blender.

I spent a long time trying to find a decent envelope filter. I used to have a Q-tron but it was hopeless with active basses. I tried a bunch of pedals including the EBS and all the electro-harmonix pedals until I found the EMMA DiscomBoBulator. It's a Danish pedal and it sounds better than anything else as far as I'm concerned. Might be tricky to try out first though...

Hmmmm.... if EMMA is Danish, I wonder if TC Electronics has anything to do with them>>>?????? :ninja:

Anyhow... I like putting an octave below the envelope/direct sound to synth it out, if I'm gonna use it and it's rare, so any more suggestions???????? :hiding:

anyone got an agent funk pedal?

Yeah I have one and I love it, it is my favorite of my filters: I also have a Q-tron, a DOD FX25 and a Bassballs. It is really versatile and will do subtle to extreme stuff; the best thing about it for me is the pinch control which really lets you zoom in on what frequency range you want it to react to, which is a life saver if you use flats. Also with a fuzz in front of it it gets some really whacked out synth sounds. And............ it is purple!

the FX25B is "eh." the older lime green one is ":bassist:"

a few weeks ago i started basically this same thread, helping me decide on an envelope filter. in the end it came down to the older dod FX25 or a moogerfooger lowpass filter. i went with the dod and im VERY happy with it.

also you definately cant go wrong with a Q-tron..

Nope. TC did (a few years ago) license some designs from another brand from that region, T-Rex. So there were two or three pedals from TC that were essentially identical to some pedals from T-Rex. But it was all above-board and legit. EMMA is their own thing, no connection.

Please a little more detail on the BSW????

Well the Digitech Bass Synth Wah is a very versatile pedal. Probably the funnest pedal on my board. It has 7 modes: filter, sub filter, synth 1, synth 2, filter 1, filter 2 & octasub.

Loads of people will follow me here and say that most of the modes outside of filter and octaver settings are useless...to each his own.

It can make some weird sounds (which I dig) by experimenting with the different settings and modes. They usually have them at a GC or big chains so you should check one out!
