Looking for a Good Delay Pedal

While the OP has purchased a delay (well, two), for those still searching for a cheap-yet-decent delay, and where tap-tempo is needed, the Sinvertek Delay boasts a lot of features for its price-point.

Funny thing. I used to run my bass a lot through an actual Echoplex on a minimal setting back in the 70s. I always assumed it was the tape that was giving me what I wanted. But then I got a chance to try Dunlop’s EP101 Echoplex Preamp pedal and realized what I really liked about the Echoplex was it’s preamp stage.

Live and learn.

There are plenty of pedals out there now that ape this or that tape-machine's preamp, film projectors etc; and if you've got solder-singed nostrils then there are PCBs/Kits for the Echoplex preamp, SDD3000 pre and a few others I forget.

Can you DIY?

Are you good with a soldering iron?

So many good kits and veroboard-builds out there if you are handy!

I built up a PT-80 Delay from General Guitar Gadgets, and have been pretty happy with it. I can cop the Pink Floyd "One of these Days..." Echorec-style very closely, as well as do some interesting Gilmour-ish stuff too.

Other than that, I'm empty on suggestions. I'm just a kit-whore when it comes to this stuff!

YEAH! And add one of the preamps mentioned above (or take two, they're small) to your delay build . Echoplex on a budget and no need to align/deflux/demag tape heads...

I’m partial to the old DOD Delay for something cheap and analog. My favorite however, is the Way Huge Echo Puss. Basically a Carbon copy with mod controls on top and a tone control. Quite versatile.

+1! I just wish it had Tap-Tempo then it'd be perfect. Hmmm never thought about it before, but wondering if it can be modded for tap-tempo — I know some PT2399 delays can be modded for tap-tempo but then you lose their modulation capabilities. I've never opened mine up to look inside. Must investigate...

When PGS was still around, I snagged the big 4-stomper Alter Ego machine for about the price of the smallest single-stomper Alter Ego. It emulates all the classic delays, and does looping too. I've seen them on sale from time to time, almost as low in price as I bought mine, so worth keeping an eye out for a sale, if you've got the pedalboard real-estate.

Great thread, thanks OP....I too have been exploring delay. Many folks have mentions mxr carbon copy and the bright but no mention of the deluxe which includes the bright option as a switch and also has additional functionality like tap tempo. Any reason that hasn’t been mentioned that I should know about or safe to say if I am willing to go the MXR route that the deluxe is the best option if price is less of a factor?

RE EchoPuss Mods...

SMD, beyond my capabilities for any sort of modding.

Still a great pedal, though, despite the short-comings pointed out by Mirosol.

I was looking for a Super-Puss or Supa-Puss when I came across a deal on the Echo-Puss — no regrets.

All these recommendations for the Carbon Copy is making me second guess selling mine to OP @BassBeginer64! Actually passing it on for a (Recovery) Cutting Room Floor, which does delay with some pitch bending tape-like effects. Super intrigued and excited to receive mine soon, though something tells me that classic CC sound is gonna be missed at some point in the future...

Enjoy the world of delay, @BassBeginer64!

I'm having a major "pops when switching on or off" issue with my Carbon Copy, which is souring me on it a bit. Just pulled it out to use on a gig this weekend. Liking the sound, but not the big "POP" when it goes on or off...

Tap tempo...LOL! Why, back in my day, we set delays using nothing but our ears and we liked it!

Bah! Climb back in your Model T and be on your way old man! :spit:

And I'll try to bumpstart my ol' flat-four airschooled V-dub... :meh:

There's a reason we aren't still driving skinny wooden-spoked 30x3.5 wheeled vehicular contraptions around. There is a better way to go...

But what I ended up settling on the longest was the Boss DD3. So I would recommend the DD3 or DD7. Those are really good, entry level delays that won't break your bank. The DD7 will have a couple other features the DD3 doesn't have. If you want to spend a tad more you can get a DD 500 that is chalk full of goodies and different delays.
I'm taking into consideration to buy a delay, I don't want to spend much because I'm not sure that I will like it and if I can use it efficiently for what I had in mind
I'm not an atmospheric stuff fan, I want a delay to have clean repeats to send to amp 2 and being not aligned to what you hear from amp 1 like if they were 2 different instruments
For something like this I just need a very precise and tweakable tap tempo I believe, and memory to save my presets
Someone asked in the Pedalboard of Doom group on FB a pedal for a similar purpose and DD3 and DD7 were suggested
Now I have found a DD3 for 60€ and a DD7 for 90€ and I just wanted to ask if for my purpose one of these two would be suitable and if the DD7 has some function that I could need and is worth that 30% more

The only thing the DD7 has over the 3 is the tap tempo and a couple other delay models. I could be wrong but I think it also has the stereo ins and outs and the 3 doesn’t? Can’t remember. So if that stuff is a need or is important to you, go with the 7. But if you want a great, simple delay without all the bells and whistles the 3 is the way to go. They both sound great. Some say the 3 sounds better. That’s all relative though. Just depends on how many features you want really.

I see neither of them can save presets... Is there any unexpensive, simple delay with presets?
(Maybe I don't really need them, I'm not sure, I never used a delay before. Do I need them for what I want to do?)

I’ve never really needed presets for delay either. It just depends on what you’re doing. Maybe look into the line 6 DL4. It’s huge and normally around $150 or less used but it can do a lot and I believe you can save presets on it. It’s def not “simple” though. But I know
It’s vert easy to use. There’s a reason you’ve seen on so many boards over the years. I had the sorta shrunk down version of it, the hardwire DL8. That was a great delay too.

If you want to go all in the new Grand Canyon delay from EHX is just about 250$ from new, sounds amazing and is capable of almost everything delay related, plus all the parameters can be assigned to an expression pedal however you wish, even more at the same time, as well as the direction and interval that is controlled can be set for each of the assigned parameters.
Also functions as a looper that can handle up to 16 minutes of samples.

Otherwise for a cheaper and smaller solution the EHX Canyon is an amazing delay pedal as well, that comes in a small enclosure but still has a lot of features build in.
Secondary parameters for each of the delay types is controlled with the regular delay knobs and accessed by holding down the Tap/Divide button for 1 second.
