Looking For A Heavily Saturated Bass Fuzz!

YO!

Question in the title...

But to be more specific...

The thing which I want from my bass fuzz is chainsaw saturation. I'm not keen on the big woolly BWOOOFFF like the sound of a blown out speaker, nor am I keen on the HOOOONKK from a big mid-rangey fuzzy thing that you can get from putting the tone knob of a Big Muff on zero. I get why they are a thing, but when I step on a fuzz, I want top end saturation and fizz and grind.

Sometimes a Big Muff does this, but sometimes a Big Muff can get too woolly and BWOF-ish. Sometimes it has the fizzy coolness up top, but it also blows out the bottom end and still goes BWOOOOF.

I used to use an Orange Fur Coat fuzz and that was killer! However mine seems to have died (will do some more tests). But beyond a big muff and that fur coat fuzz, I've not done much fuzz exploring so I'm interested in other options.

Do you like sharp-yet-corpulent gated fuzz? I'm tellin you, try the Fender Hello Kitty fuzz. Start with the knobs all at 5 and tune to taste. I absolutely love this damn pedal. We made a video on it actually, after I bought it and discovered it was great.

That Orange Fur Coat Fuzz has been on my watch list for a while. I’d grab another one if I were you, since you already know you like it.


I’ve not seen much chatter here about it, nor any bass demos but the Wampler Cryptid Fuzz has a ton of range and styles that I like the sound of on guitar demos. I’m tempted to give one a gamble. I think they could get into territory you like, but I just don’t know if they have enough low end for a bass fuzz.

Damnation has the Fuzz Enforcer and the Spite Box. The Fuzz Enforcer might be a better fit but it’s worth a demo video or two.





Plenty of other good options out there. Just adding a few that I thought of.

Not a big fan of the spitty gated stuff. But that was sounding pretty cool!

I also was interested in the Walrus Audio Jupiter Fuzz but that's not in production anymore? Did Walrus do a replacement?

I don't think they did a direct replacement after the Jupiter v2 - though it looks like you can still get that one readily on Reverb. From their current lineup, the Eons is different, but it is fairly versatile IIRC so you might find your ideal sound somewhere in there.

To me, chainsaw saturation = fuzz.

Too bad you hate the Big Muff because I was going to suggest the Bass Big Muff. My other suggestion would be a Fuzz Face…I had one of these but sold it for $$$$$$$$$$$$, bought a BBMuff and pocketed the change. :thumbsup:

Does Boss still make the ODB-3 Bass Overdrive? I had one briefly looking for something with less gain than the Fuzz Face but thought it sounded like a fuzz, too.

That's weird, but yes they did a V2 version, here in Europe the WA Jupiter Fuzz V2 can be found on any music instruments webshop.

I agree a gated fuzz is absolutely NOT what you need, so exit 3Leaf Audio Doom 2, the Zvex Wooly Mammoth and Mastotron fuzzes too. I'm in the gated synth fuzz team, and you described very well what it does and don't like. I would go with the Orange Fur Coat suggested by monsterthompson.

EDIT: EarthQuakerDevices Acapulco Gold too could be nice

Clips always help, right? I'd say visit The Wetter Bass on Youtube for an even better demo, but I have been loving the Kasleder Albatross.

It's more than a gnarly fuzz though. It's like an always on amp sound too. I think of Mew when I use it.

With my P bass. There's not a ton of drive here, but you can really hear the character during the short fill I do:

right here... devi ever : fx her new distressed line. I got a dark boost to replace the one I sold, a Ruiner is in a box somewhere, but I found the Karaoke party to be a fine mid forward overdrive, but it's dangerous because it has too much "volume on tap" above 8am and speakers paid.
someone mentioned MXR Brown Acid, I was fortunate to buy one in the short run, it's is a wall of fuzz with lots of low end. The TAFM was best at a whole sound mixing the clean preamp with the fuzz, again great lows. Another mention would be SSBS BZZZZ, a superfuzz which has a low eq setting that "rules" as we say... I did start with the Wounded Paw Attack Goat (a Superfuzz) with a clean blend and eq. worked great after an overdrive (like Karaoke Party).
