Looking for a new cool bass

Hi,

I'm new to the forms, and would like to ask for a new bass.
See, I've been playing for a while with my Ibanez GSR205, but I don't really like the 5th string, can't get used to it, also because it's really slim and my big hands don't seem to get used (I have had this bass for about 6 months now). Well, there is something on this bass I like, and it is that it has a really bright tone when using both pickups at the same volume (I usually have both in max volume), but this sound will get too much into the mix, and I'd like something with more punch.

So I guess I want a 4 string bass that is just a little wider in scale than this one, but not that is huge; guess I'd also like the possibility to switch the tone so that I can have both a punchy/warm tone and a mid/high brighter tone for some lead phrases. Do you think a Squier J/P Bass Deluxe would do? That, or maybe something with a H/H or H/S setup...

Third? Well I do not really live in the USA, but what the hell, I might finish buying it there. hmm. Something between 300 and 600 USD...

Ok, wow thats a pretty big price range. I assume when you're talking about the neck being too thin you're talking about the string spacing being too narrow? Either way there are many basses you can look at. Check out some other ibanez basses,mainly the SR and SRX line,and Schecter basses. If you wanna stick with the PJ I've heard good things about the peavey zodiac basses.

Sounds like a P/J could be a real winner for you. Nice wide neck, great P sound, and growly neck pup to add that little bit of definition. And for soloing =P

Necks on PJs are usually jazz bass necks,so not exactly what many would call "wide". A regular P bass would work with some Bassline Pickups.

I guess the Ibanez SR300 is nice, but what do you think? And, should I go active or passive?

Active is going to give you more versatility and more control over your tone. The SR300s are nice basses, if you have a chance,playing before hand is the best way to find out what you like. How long have you been playing?

I mostly play metal (metallica, nightwish, stratovarius, hammerfall, etc) and some rock aswell (rhcp, enanitos verdes, dunno, I cant really remember how many song of how many bands I play )...

Ok, I'll try and see if there is any of this model here (I live in Mexico, and it's tought to find exact models). If not, I'll have to wait till april to buy it On guitarcenter (when I visit the USA)

Musicman bro. Off the bat.Once you go to Musicman you'll never play anything else. i'd suggest a Stingray but you can go ahead and try Sterlings and Bongo's. Have fun.

thats way out of his price range. and theyre hardly warm sounding instruments with rounds.

+1 on Music Man except that they are outta your price range - even used.

You can find on eBay or here on TB great used 4 string Schecters between $300 and $600. Prices vary between set necks/neck throughs, pup configurations, pup brand, etc. The necks are all 34" or 35" and normal (medium) width.

My Diamond Elite-4 has active EMG-HC pups which give me all the tone and growl variations I could want from a bass. The fit and finish on Shecters is equal toi that of basses costing twice as much. Mine was $400 used @ GC.



Of course, the best way to select a bass is to play it. I realize that may be a problem for you.
